January 2021 Week 3
Comments (63)Danny, I'm so sorry. I haven't had to deal with this yet....and fortunately (so far) Mom and I get along very well. My Dad died at 53. Mom is 74 now. BUT, I can (sort of) imagine how painful all of this must be for you. And complicated. You're a good son to continue to try to care for him even through all the pain and hurt. Prayers! Around here, I can't seem to get it together. And I can't seem to say no. Next week. Next week is my new year. Fingers crossed. I'm cleaning today. I really, really wish I wasn't one of those annoying people who have to have my physical environment a certain way for me to feel relaxed and creative and settled. HU worked on the GH on Thursday. It's pretty solid. He's doing a great job, but I'll let him tell about it it more when he's ready. I held the hammer a few times. LOL Larry, I think you mentioned something on one of the threads wondering how we all grow everything that we grow...and how you don't have space for it all. I think the deal is that a lot of us only grow a small amount of a particular thing. While you go all in and grow a lot of each thing. That is HU's way too. I'm trying to do a combination this year. I want a LOT of some things--things for canning. Even tomatoes of a particular type. All of this is our survivalist garden. Then, I want to grow one or two of a few other things in the kitchen garden. Certain tomatoes and peppers that I don't need a lot of. The exception is onions. I think they do better in raised beds, so they'll go in the kitchen garden. I'd better stop sitting and get back at it. Alone time at home is a rare and treasured thing, so I need to take advantage of it....See MoreJuly 2021 week 3
Comments (42)Jen, I haven't been out to the kitchen garden in a couple of days. Maybe the caterpillars are still there. I'm hoping to have time to water everything tomorrow evening and look over it all. I did see a beautiful black swallowtail on Thursday. It was interested in the scarlet sage, but when I went out to observe it, it left. We got M & M all moved in. I fixed up a "first breakfast in your new home" housewarming basket: my homemade blackberry jelly, english muffins, our eggs, some turkey bacon, juice, and some treats for their "boys". They have two dogs that are their children: Nico and Milo. I hope they enjoy their breakfast tomorrow. Stella comes in tomorrow afternoon. I'll just be getting in from work. I didn't get the house completely "prepared" but it looks and feels mostly good. Pet issues continue. You know how everyone says declawed cats have behavioral problems and how cruel and horrible their lives are if they get declawed? In the past (before I learned it was cruel), my kittens were always declawed. Not one of them had a behavioral problem. They could climb fences, trees, even houses. They were happy. Didn't have food issues or litterbox issues. My current cats all have their claws. They have behavioral problems. One of my momma hens was attacked by another momma hen. Blossom's eye is swollen and her face looks horrible. Her baby slipped into Stormy's side of the kennel. Blossom went over the barrier to get her baby. I found them fighting. Both chicks are fine. Blossom and her baby are back in the chick brooder so that Blossom's face can be kept clean. Blossom's baby is the one who had the torn "armpit" earlier. I think B is better today. I brought her in yesterday and today to treat her face and give her yogurt--probiotics, protein and calcium. I've really messed up this year with hen/chick "apartments". I have plans for a broody hen/chick apartment complex. I would like 6 (3 on one side and 3 on the other) broody boxes with removeable lids. Each box would have an attached small pen done right with proper hardware cloth. Although, next year I'm not planning on doing so many broody hens. I have a feeling it's because I let the first ones go so long and others jumped on the bandwagon. The two broody hens were moved to the extra dog kennel today. They hated it. It's not completely secure so they were put back into the main coop tonight to sleep. They immediately jumped off the roost bar and went to their nests. No eggs, though. I guess, we'll continue this until hopefully they give up. The temperature makes me cranky. All coops/brooders have fans. Tomorrow starts a new week....See MoreAugust 2021 Week 3
Comments (43)I'm definitely in the mood for Garry to try our first watermelon (ChouChou). Uh-oh. Bad news. I got a message from John showing a frost weed that was eaten to the nub. He wondered what bug was having a feast. Bad news. Blister beetles at Lincoln. I remember Dawn saying they were apt to show up in large numbers with huge grasshopper infestations. Oddly, I was just out here looking and didn't see them. But I'm bummed they showed up at Lincoln. Poor John. I told him what they were and he put his gloves on and began smushing. He said he got about 50 so far. THEN he showed me a picture of the "cutworm" he smushed. Which wasn't a cutworm, but a hornworm. Tobacco, I think--it had an orange horn. Smart guy from Butterflies and Moths told me how to distinguish it. I let John know; know he'll feel bad. But at least now he knows. Told him I hoped he gave it a lovely funeral! lol There were so many butterflies at Lincoln, my head was spinning--lots of swallowtails and Monarchs--crazy cool, I had picked some split melons and must have had some juice on my hand, and a Question mark landed on my hand! Of course it was my right hand and I couldn't get a picture. lol Meanwhile, I went out to gather peppers--there's a couple boatloads. But I forgot to spray down for mites, so came dashing back--but have my very first two super hot ones! Fatalii and Yellow Ghost pepper. I was so late with getting them in--and they DO grow and produce slowly. Meanwhile. . . Sugar Rush Peach peppers. Everyone's clamoring for them because they are SO big and productive. That thing has peppers all OVER it! (So do the Ros de Mallorca, Hungarian paprika, Cayenne, and Thunder Mountain. I think I'll mix a lot of them together and make pickled ones. Maybe.) Well, that's about it for now. Rain again tomorrow, it looks like. Yay....See MoreDec. 12 2021, week 3
Comments (62)Lost my first post. The Chinese characters are grayed out today. Margaret's was good. I love the goulash. Ron did not care for the special, beef rouladen. He said it wasn't bad, just not memorable. But we brought home the jeager snitzle (I'm not sure of spelling). It is breaded pork cutlet with mushroom gravy. The new owner is Polish. Don't know how the menu will change. It started to rain as soon as we got on the highway to Tulsa. I hate the highways anyway, let alone while raining. Larry, I hope you feel better! You too Danny! And Kim. Dang y'all, there's not enough of us for all this illness. Nancy, the birds sound like geese. Snow geese would be white. White pelicans have black under their wings. Sandhill cranes...there were a bunch at the Great Salt Plains, but most have moved south. H/J, spring pictures appreciated. I need to go, Ron is fidgeting....See Moreslowpoke_gardener
