Curved stair rail problem

Hi there! Just bought a little house in the Bahamas that needs some love. First problem - these stairs. Not in the budget to totally renovate, but hoping for improvement with some new stair railing. Do I need a stair rail? The window is in an unfortunate spot but can’t be moved. Low profile is better. Walls are all concrete. Everything imported is taxed in a big way so less expensive is better. I need something creative!! Please help!! (Ps we are painting everything white lol). Thanks in advance!!

So you need to find out what the code is for staircases where you are . That staircase where I live would not pass code.

Agree…. Honestly, I really think it’s a little “Wild West” over there. I’m just looking for something safe enough and attractive. This has been a rental property for years and has had no problems, but I agree…. It ain’t good.

Leave it be. Stair work is some of the most expensive zero payback work that you can have done. And what you had was so much better than the overwrought 1997 fakery shown.

Thanks so much for your response. I didn't think it would look right to only do the hardwood in the middle. I was concerned about the cost and waste of replacing the railing and spindles and hoped they could be reused. We would really like the stairs to be hardwood as the entrance foyer opens to them.

I’m not the OP but this question relates to my current dilemma. We are replacing treads on stairs and the “discussion” is stuck on the risers. Should they be stained to match or painted white. I have seen both but it seems more recent design is going with stained risers. Since the last time we tried to redo these stairs was 13 years ago and we couldn’t agree on a lot of things and scrapped the project, I don’t want to get stuck again. The pics are of our staircase ripped out carpeting, a pic with stained risers, and a pic with painted risers. Since we are going through the work and expense, I want to make sure we aren’t putting in dated design from the get go. The other point we are discussing is wood spindles vs metal.

I would start with a handrail that has a grippable shape, probably round, about 2” in diameter with the same clearance to wall or window trim. A pipe rail may work well with 90 degree fittings at both ends. Paint as desired.

Absolutely, especially with those dangerous winders. Paint it and forget about it please.

Lol thank you…. I know, I really do need one. This one comes out like 3/4 inch from the wall so it’s zero help really.
