How to insulate without rim joists?
Comments (9)Hello, Many thanks, as always, for the speedy replies. I'm afraid, though, that I probably wasn't as precise as I should have been. My fault. I fully expect to use XPS between the joists perpendicular to the wall, cut to fit, and sealed with caulk or Great Stuff. No need to use the spray foam as they are doing in the pictures. What I was wondering about is what I should use to fill the space between the joist that runs _parallel_ to the cinderblock wall and the cinderblock wall itself. In my original picture, it's that dark gap that starts in the center at the top of the photo and then "runs" away from you toward the bottom of the photo. That gap is the entire height and length of the joist (but the gap is not even and there are various random mortar protrusions, some of which you can see in the picture). Should I use Great Stuff to fill that void, before I start adhering my XPS sheets below that? If not, what should I put up in that void (because I don't have a rim joist)? Thank you very much! Comments (12)Bump... C'mon someone out there should know what the galavaniced U chanlel stuff is called and where it could be purchased. Tradidional wooden rim joist even if it is done with terated lumber might not be the best idea in my case, I do not want much ground clearance csince I do not want this shed to sit too elevated. Galavanized steel seems to be the way to go form me. Tuff Shed is shurley not mking that stuff only for the purpose of their sheds. So where does the galvanized U -channel come from? Comments (6)I would be concerned how much the floor is out of level and if that has compromised the operation of any doors. You might need to take the load off of the framing in order to repair/replace the damaged portions. It is wise to use Grace water based primer (WB Primer) behind any Vycor adhered directly to sheathing (especially OSB) if you don't want water to get behind it. Unfortunately, it is usually sold in 5 gallon containers. Tyvek HomeWrap is pretty watertight (unlike most other housewraps) but it is not very abrasion resistant so I would not use it or any vinyl product as flashing. Avoid the use of unfinished aluminum sheet flashing against pressure treated wood or anywhere else where it will be in constant contact with water....See MoreInsulating brick and block rim joists
Comments (2)Apply the XPS as shown in the Building Science Corp. link above. For a tight seal, you can then use handheld expanding foam insulation, such as Great Stuff around the boards....See MoreJoseph Corlett, LLC
