Exceptionally pretty flowers in a spray - Easy on the Eyes

This one is also cane hardy for me. This is only it's second year but I am in love with the pretty blooms.

I think this one would have done well in some category.

Exceptionally pretty flowers - Fourth of July. Fourth of July was doing so poorly last year that I let some presumed Dr. Huey from the rose we dug up grow behind it. I was so pleased that Fourth of July had grown so well. Turns out there is more presumed Dr. Huey than I though in the growth. This is the largest number of Fourth of July blooms we have had so I still like the rose.

The blooms are exceptionally pretty.

Fourth of July was cane hardy this last winter so that is promising as the Denver Rose Society lists it as iffy in Denver. Not sure if we will continue to let presumed Dr. Huey grow with her or keep trying to take him out.

I started out years ago with handwritten markers next to the roses and a drawing of the garden bed with the roses marked on it. Then I gradually increased until I needed a looseleaf binder to hold a page for each rose I had planted, and finally I graduated to an Excel spread sheet. I still do the hand drawn map of each bed (there are now over a dozen distinct areas in my garden so that many maps) and I still have markers next to each rose although now I use a labeler to write out the name. I can identify from memory almost every one of my 200 roses. (But now and then I have brain fade and I have to bend down to check the marker, LOL!) The spreadsheet just helps me track where I bought the rose, own root or grafted, what year, fragrance, size, disease resistance and other info I might find useful.

Bustopher, yes, I did save my lisianthus over winter several times. I tried to grow them on a windowsill and in the garage under lights. Both methods work just fine. The only drawback is the space they require both in the house and in the garage - I have dozens of tender tropicals that I keep inside over the winter. I prefer to grow lisianthus from seed, just have to start them really early. They take forever to bloom when grown from seed. Marina

Hey Vapor, for you in zone 6, you will need to dig up the bulbs of tuberoses. I started with three little bulbs in three pots three years ago. At the end of each year, I've been able to divide one pot into 2-3 divisions. This is what I do. I plant them in pots because it's much easier to winterize the plants that way. I would wait till the leaves start to turn brown from the cold night time temperature and cut all the leaves down to about 3". Then I would upturn the pot to get the entire root ball out and use two garden forks to split it into either 2 or 3 divisions, depending on how big the plant has grown. Each division is then placed in a gallon food storage bag. A little water is added into the root ball/potting soil so it feels moist, but not soaking wet. Then I would use a piece of twine to loosely tie the bag around the remaining dried up leaves to help keep the moisture in the bag longer. I then place all my divisions in the section of my basement which is connected to my unheated garage. The temperature there in the dead of winter goes down to about 45 degrees F. But I suspect refrigerator temperature (~ 38-40 degrees) will work as well. The only thing in winter you need to pay attention to is to periodically feel the potting soil in the bag and make sure it doesn't become too dry. If so, water it with a spray bottle. The bulbs will wake up in spring by sending fresh green leaves up the tied neck to tell you they're coming out of dormancy. If you pot them up in late March/early April indoors then transition them out when it's warmer, they will bloom for you in early July. Tuberoses really are super easy to grow and very disease-free, and they will reward you with that amazing fragrance, quite unlike anything I've smelled. --Lin

The minis - Denver's Dream

Miniature - Dick Koster. The first flowers in spring of this are always washed out. But the bloom shape is fantastic.

Dick Koster has been a disappointingly slow grower.

Don't photograph well because they over saturate the camera but so loaded with blooms that I could have found several at the right stage of development to take to the show.

Thanks all! The roses give me great pleasure. Amiga Mia has been a pleasant surprise. High Country Roses lists it as occasional repeat. Helpmefind says it repeats in flushes. I've found it to be a continuous bloomer for me as it seems to always have some blooms.

In terms of fragrance it has really out done itself this year. High Country Roses says delightful fragrance which I agree with. Very classic rose smell. Helpmefind says strong fragrance. Putting the two together you get a delightful strong fragrance.

My delight with it caused me to seek out another Buck Rose, Calico Gal. It has gorgeous blooms but I need to give it more time to see how it does with winter hardiness and frequency of blooms.

If I were walking someone through my yard who was interested in roses in Colorado I would steer them to Winnipeg Parks, Amiga Mia, Pretty Lady Rose and Easy on the Eyes. Iceberg and The Fairy would probably also make the list but they sort of sit in the background compared to the listed 4.
