What can I plant in these side areas? Zone 6b

Front side area

What are some things that I can plant in these areas? The front side area is self-contained and I would like to plant some stonecrop and maybe ornamental grasses and something colorful. My goals are to have a native pollinator friendly garden. I also noticed a few neighborhood cats and I want to make sure I'm not planting anything harmful. The backside area connects to my neighbor so I want to make sure I don't plant anything that will be invasive to their yard.

This is my first spring here and I am officially garden obsessed and overwhelmed. I want to plant all the things. I am doing some container gardening on the deck as well. I would also like to get some stuff in the ground.

I want to get rid of grass wherever I can. I idiotically paid someone to clean and re mulch the garden beds in the front. They ended up using weed and feed and mulched right up against the trees which I now regret and am removing. I would like to be able to compost the grass going forward. They also used landscape fabric which I have been removing.

You will be more likely to get feedback if you put the photos directly in the thread and give us some info on the amount of sun each area gets and at what time of day such as all afternoon or midday only for 4 hours.

Also, can you give us a general part of the country such nearest big city? Zone 6 in NM is pretty different from z 6 in Illinois or in MA.

Good ideas with moving mulch from tree trunks, getting rid of the landscape fabric, and avoiding invasives and aggressively spreading plants!

I don't know where you are located but grownative.org has lots of information about natives for Missouri...including garden designs for various conditions & goals.

Donna, That is great! I would be very interested in hearing what varieties didn't survive, which survived and flowered, and which survived and did not flower, if you have the information. I am mostly interested in knowing the ones that did not survive. Last year I planted extra seed from my crosses directly in the ground to see if any young seedlings could survive the winter. I did not mulch many of them. With the harsh winter, the ground sometimes froze at least to the depth of the little seedling bulbs, so I thought they would all be dead. But nearly all of them survived. They are now much smaller than their siblings that I kept under lights all winter, so they will probably take many years to bloom, but it gives an option to grow many more seedlings than I would otherwise be able! It depends on where you live as to what is feasible especially since you want to squeeze in 3 crops in one season. Beans probably would be your best choice but beans take minimum 60-65 days from seeding until pulling out plants after the first harvest so if you planted 7/1 you would have beans in the bed until early to mid September which in much of the country would be too late for planting fall peas and spinach. If you can leave room in the bed for seeding the spinach and pea rows before the beans are harvested you might be able to get 3 crops in if all the stars align :).

Thanks. It is a blended product of KY Bluegrass, Perennial Rye, Creeping Red Fescue, Chewings Fescue for sun and shade. I'm using it for blending smaller areas and not a complete lawn.
