Square tablecloth for round dining table?

I have a 48" round dining table. I'd like to buy a square tablecloth instead of a round one, because I think the round will look a bit dowdy. I also want a coated French jacquard tablecloth and they're all 69" x 69". Will that size cloth look too small? Or will it just look more casual?

too small. the tips of the sq. should nearly touch the floor. Buy some fabric you love and have it made to fit properly.

Thank you, but I don't want it to hit the floor. I'm looking for something like this or even a bit shorter. Unfortunately, my table is larger than this one. I did find some 71" square tablecloths that I like.

Unfortunately, I'm dead set on getting a Garnier Thiebaut stain-resistant tablecloth at this point, so I do think I'll have to settle for a round one. Why aren't there more choices?

It's your basic old square oak dining table, likely dating from about 1910 to 1925 or so. That size table was very common ( or should I say "usual") in the farm house auctions I have attended....and I have attended hundreds. That style table is one of the reasons for all the huge linen old tablecloths out there. I would seriously doubt that is in handmade, none others that I have seen were. It's from that "golden oak" era. Some of those olds quare farmhouse tables had 5 legs, some had the split pedestal as yours does. Having the original finish won't seriously enhance the value....so I would strip it and bring it back into daily use. I have one similar that I had cut down into a coffee table....I know!!! I know 90" can be hard to find. I was in search of a square one for my table that goes from rectangle to square (with leaf) so that it seats 2 on each side. I never did find one I liked, so I used a full/queen quilt that I found at TJMaxx a couple of years ago (bought 2, in different colors). I liked the quilt on it so much that I bought twin size to use on it when it's not opened up. Great protection for the table. You could either try a square one on your round table or what about cutting one into a circle and hemming it? Tracey

My MIL had these chairs and a similar table, but the backs was cained. When she died the set was passed to a grand son who recently passed them to his sister, newly married. I was shocked at the cheap IKEA set he preferred. I tried to find the set by doing a search so I could date it. I tried MCM and got no where. I believe her set was maple and the table was round w/o the leaves with a center pedestal leg arrangement. There was a discussion on keeping or passing on hand me downs two weeks ago. This style seems very non specific to me. One that could blend in many decors, not overly large, ornate,or bold. After seeing what he chose vs this set it is easier for me to understand that some styles just would not work in some homes,no matter how "free".

It’s not easy to update just one piece, but I think the table is a good choice. It‘s certainly not too heavy, feels more modern and light and will connect with your furniture. I wouldn’t add strong pops of color just for color sake, as you mentioned you like neutrals. There are so many ways to add interest by layering, texture, pattern, art. You could change rug to a less busy design with colors that better help pull the space together and be sure it includes creamy white to complement/bring out coffee table’s surface. Look for updated cushions, combining solids and patterns and accessorize coffee table. There is a lot of helpful information on Pinterest. The accessories and style of rug below would be lovely in your room, a nice refresh. Could also consider redoing shelving and again reference Pinterest for ideas.

I have the same size table. I put a round table cloth and top it with the smaller square ones I love. Works great. Just don't use too large of a round cloth; something that hangs down about halfway to the floor or a bit longer is best. You don't want it to look like a banquet table.

Actually, I just realized that some of my cloths I use underneath are actually rectangles with the square one offset on top. They show lots of larger squares on round tables, too.

The one you posted would look wonderful with a white cloth under it, or any of the blues, or even a complementary print.

Here is one (not coated, I don't think), 100" x 65" that they use on a round table. The table is smaller than 48", but you could still get away with a rectangle and top with a square if you want. Or just a rectangle. I do it all the time.

I'm confused, the inspiration photo drop is basically what you'll get using a 69" tablecloth. There's a 10" drop of the material from the 48" table top.
