Degroot Spire Cedar Color Question

Hello. My wife and I planted 13 degroot spire cedars along one of our backyard fences last July. They were always a nice deep rich green. About a month ago we started noticing that parts of some of the trees turned into a dull green while other parts of the same tree remained the same deep green that they always hadbeen. Please see the picture. The dull green parts don’t feel dry and really don’t feel different than the deep green parts The trees are watered deeply by a drip hose about twice per week for about an hour each time. They have been fertilized once in May and a second time in June as per the fertilizer instructions. Is it normal for Degroots to have dull and almost greyish green parts while other parts are a deep rich green?

Mine get looking like that at times from a heavy infestation of spider mites ... if that's the case, a few repeated blastings from the garden hose will be of help.

Thank you. I will blast with the garden hose. Do you think the tree will come back from the damage seen?

Brent, No rain here. They also called off the effects of the cold front we were supposed to be getting, i.e., the temps are now going to be in the upper eighties instead of very low eighties (as had been forecast all week). I'm bummed. If a mattock is the same thing as a pick-axe, then it has become the most used tool in our arsenal as well. Our tiller can't do anything except scrape the surface. (BTW: How's Otto doing?) Frankie, Because I am a plant junkie, and because I am turning DH into one as well, we will certainly be adding more and more plants in coming months and years. The immediate problem with our ground conditions has come about due to zero rainfall for the past five weeks. Normally our soil is fairly easy to work with. laag, Thanks. I understand what you mean about too much of a flattening effect. I am doing what I can to re-work what's here to lessen the effect. As much as I would like to have larger specimens to start with, I can't seem to find any. So I will have to count on time, to some extent, to add more depth to the scene. Many of the shrubs we do have will (fairly rapidly) reach 4-6 feet in height and width, which should have a favorable effect on the "depth factor". During the course of this posting, I find myself staring more and more often across the street to my neighbors front yard. His is a two story brick colonial and is masterfully grounded by medium and large shrubby trees planted across the front and at the "wings" on either side. I would be sorely tempted to copy many of his plant choices if it weren't for the fact that his front yard has a northern exposure (shade) and mine is the total opposite. I can, however, try to mimic the size and forms of his plantings. If he has managed to properly "ground" a large two story colonial, then my challenge should be child's-play in comparison. Annie, The trellis is 10 ft. tall and 4 ft. wide and the bottom two feet are buried in the dirt. Although it is technically possible to move it, it is already at least 15 inches out from the siding (for air circulation) and I think it would look odd if it were any farther away from the wall. Still, the rose is less than a year old and will probably get much bushier as it matures and is regularly pruned. That should help to achieve the effect you describe. ......Jan

'Smaragd' has been measured 17 ft. tall in Seattle and I may have seen older examples planted before it became popular here that are more than double that height - the only question being if these are in fact 'Smaragd' and not one of the many other cultivars of T. occidentalis that have been named and grown. (If I become interested enough to take the trouble I could find out if any of these are 'Smaragd' by comparing foliage samples). Since there are 'Fastigiata' known over 40 ft. tall and the other two cultivars ('De Groot's Spire', 'Smaragd') discussed here aren't dwarf forms either I fully expect them to grow as tall as well, given enough time. 'Smaragd' is exceptionally prone to root rot, with internet queries about established hedges browning out and dying in sections having been rather numerous in the past. If this is a low, damp place another cultivar (or different species entirely) would probably be less of a gamble. If you plant an assortment of different plants there is more visual interest and less risk (if one or two kinds fail there is still the others, unlike when the one that falters and dies out makes up the entire planting) than with a row of one kind. And in this case the row of one kind being columnar conifers would produce a tense effect (like soldiers at attention) that seems at odds with relaxing in and around a pool. Also when you have an evergreen hedge right next to a wood fence the hedge may rub on the wood or keep it damp. There is also the problem of access to the fence or hedge for maintenance and repair being blocked by the close proximity and crowding. And when planting around swimming pools you want to choose plants with large parts that will not be easily and continuously sucked into pool filters or be hard to fish out of the water. The fine-textured debris of arborvitaes seems like it could be a nightmare in this situation. You are probably going to have to come up with an architectural solution such as arbors or trellises in order to get some screening on that side. If codes prohibit this then I guess you are stuck with being the neighborhood spectacle, out in the open like at a motel pool. Erecting a structural screen would also give much quicker relief than a hedge planting, which will take years to size up - how many summers do you want to wait for your increased privacy? Emerald Spire: Nominal 20' x 7 feet; Purple spire Nominal 16' x 5-6' Midnight Spire. I expect to be similar to purple. These 3 are from Jeffries and are closely related. Pink Spire is much wider. The first 3 are very vase shaped with the widest point at the top. all have apples about the size of a quarter. Most of the apples fall withing 2 feet of the trunk. Royal Mist and Gladiator are both upright ovals getting about 10 feet wide by 20 feet tall. Royal Mist has deeper pink flowers, and matt finish leaves, while gladiator has glossy leaves. Gladiator has an overall impression of being more red. Both are marble sized apples. Green wall is an extremely columnar tree about 16' x 3 feet. In spring you can hardly see the leaves for all the blossoms. Marble sized apples. I have all but midnight and pink for sale at my farm if you are near Edmonton, AB

i would take a hand trowel or tablespoon.. and dig 3 to 6 inch holes in and around the gob planted.. AND FIND OUT ABOUT MOISTURE AT ROOT DEPTH ...

tree time is counted in decades ... sometimes it can take a long time for damage to appear .. and we fail to look far enough back in time.. to find the issue ...

watering trees can be hard on irrigation .. ensuring moisture is getting down into the root mass ..

then there is the issue of how you planted... your timing in july was not prime ... but the other trees made it .. so you must be rather close on perfecting it ... see section one link below ...

which leads us to pot problems on this one.. that the others didnt have .. did you do any root surgery ... or notice severely winding roots in the pot ...

i have planted dozens of these .. and never fertd them .. ever ... and my garden is sand ... it neither here nor there.. it has nothing to do with what is going on .. but to me.. its a waste of money ...

i dont know if it can recover ... only time will tell.. just check and perfect watering is about all you can do ..

and if you think spraying them down for the suggested bugs will make a difference.. it sure wont hurt anything ... though you might want to look up how to ID those things are on your plants [its not easy] ... but since you are using just water.. does it really matter.... its not like you are using poison on a whim ... and also consider.. one of the issues with a monoculture.. is that if one or 2 of them had bugs.. most likely they all would ...and that doesnt seem to be what we are seeing ....

you will probably know the end of the story in the high heat of august ... they will either make it thru that.. or they will brown out ...

and if they die.. and you want to replant.. do it in the next proper planting season which is fall or winter.. depending where you are ... see section one at link below ... you can buy the replacements anytime .... but hold them over in the pots until proper planting time... if you wait to buy in fall.. you might not find what you want ... but you might also contemplate the monoculture aspect.. and plant something else in between ... as in fall.. you could move a couple of these to make a more artistic setting .. if you get my drift ...

and.. they are thuja ... not cedar .. for future reference .... i know cedar is a common name.. but you may as well use the right name ...

Mine have recovered from many spider mite attacks over the years, sometimes mother nature takes care of matters when we receive heavy rains and downpours. I'd avoid hosing them off in the hot afternoon sun, rather best in the evening or early morning hours. Spider mites cause a dulling and speckling of foliage and webbing can be seen at times and even the very tiny buggers themselves if one has very good vision or takes a magnifying glass out. Also, as Ken says, if your soil is good, these young trees of yours really do not require fertilizer.
