Hi Everyone!! I am really in need of some design guidance!! We want to replace our cabinets, countertops, flooring, appliances, and furniture. Basically, everything new. Our biggest issue is whether or not we should tear out the wall between the kitchen & dinning.
Option 1: leave the wall and put a bench under the window for seating. By the door, put additional cabinets for extra storage OR put a bench with storage for shoes, etc (this may be more practical for our young growing family).
Option 2: remove the wall. Install a bench with storage by the door for shoes, etc. but what do we do with the wall with the windows??

Comments (15)These are some great ideas ... to be clear, I can paint the cabinets no problem (have experience and appropriate equipment), but I have resisted over the past couple of years because we had higher priority things to get done in the house. We're getting past those now, so have time to go back and tweek. I like idea of crown on the uppers. Removing the cab over the sink is problematic ...it has an LED under it that is really important to the sink function ... will have to look and see if I can pull it, route the wiring into the ceiling and then back down into another dangly fixture that could match whatever ends up being over the island? Funny thing ... taking photos and then studying them actually helps ME! The fan is ugly ... but it is a wonderful thing ...maybe paint it white to match ceiling? (we did this to two fans in this house and two in another ...makes them sort of disappear). We replaced two in another house with dark brown ones to hook up with the dark woodwork ... it looks good, too. We'll look at replacing the glass on the two dangly lights ...it does need some contrast from the white ... since they don't do much, anyway, perhaps industrial stainless, dark gray, red or black?...See MoreNovice Remodeler - need help with big kitchen remodel!

Comments (17)Great topic crl_ ! I spent a couple years figuring out what I wanted in my new kitchen. I had a pretty good kitchen before my reno, but there were definitely improvements to be made. My best changes: Drawers! Love lifting dinnerware up from drawer rather than down from upper cabinet. Love having my coffee cups in drawer immediately below coffee machine. Love not having to crawl around on the floor to access whatever is at the bottom and back of a cabinet. Induction! Probably the best surprise of my new kitchen, for all the same reasons listed above. Wall ovens! I don't know if I love my ovens because they are at the perfect height for me, or because I finally splurged on good equipment. Probably a combination of the two. I can tell you that my waist line is paying the price though! Big single sink. There's lots of discussion here about this. I grew up with double sinks, thought I'd probably get a low divide (best of both worlds, right?) but bit the bullet and got the single. Comments (20)I was thinking along those lines, too, and when I saw this thread again, I was hoping the OP had come back to tell us whether the hall door could be moved. I'd also suggest 24" range and fridge. All the apartment-sized appliances are commonly available, so replacing a future broken one wouldn't be a problem. In the following plan the fridge could go up to 30", with a 15" drawer base to the right. MW would have to move to the upper to the right of the sink. If an integrated cutting board is used over part of the sink, prep space could increase to the NKBA recommended minimum of 36".To use a 30" range, the 15" drawer base could go down to a 12", and the run could overlap the door trim by 3" as it does now....See MoreMaggie Seitz

2 years agolast modified: 2 years agoBecause of the beam, I'd keep the table in one room or the other, not bridging the two. If you use a bench for table seating under the window, that will leave more floor space for a mudroom-type cabinet on the opposite wall. You could fill in part of that pony wall--wide enough for a locker cabinet--and maybe just use a wider header for the section of wall you're removing.
BTW, it looks as if the door on that wall should have the swing reversed.Maggie Seitz

I need honest feedback/opinions as I have NEVER designed a kitchen! This is our first workup with Ikea. Can you have too much cabinetry in a space??
