Which cell service do you use?

We have Verizon, our service is good but I need a Ph.D. in accounting to decipher the bill each month. They pro-rate and take off discounts and add discounts and credit for odd things and charge for odd things and it makes me crazy.

Is there a cell company with unlimited data that has simple plans for cranky old people?

I use AT&T but you may want to look into Consumer Cellular. They use the Verizon network but their market does seem to be cranky old people. 🙂

We have Boost, formerly Virgin. its a flat $35.00/month. Unlimited everything, great coverage.

You know, the pipeline is so short on cellular products, any recommendations are meaningless. What's new today is obsolete tomorrow. I recommend visiting the Verizon store, check out what they are offering, see what deals they have, and go from there. Ultimately they are the ones that have to support you. So, they would not sell something they have to do a lot of work to keep alive. Shop on price and features alone. It's only a SIM card away. If you don't like it, take it back and try another one. My son just got a Samsung from T-Mobile. He had a Motorola but could never get service at his house even though the coverage map said he should have been good to go. His friend had the same plan with a Nokia phone with good bars. T-Mobile wouldn't spring for a new Nokia to try out, but they did give him a Samsung at no charge. He hates the leather case he bought for it. Does not fit well at all. But he gets calls now instead of notifications he got a call sometime in the recent past. Woohoo! Step in the right direction. Moral of the story is let the folks at the phone store help you figure out what fits you best.

CR is relatively useless for this kind of thing. For example, at least in our area, Sprint just declared 7 pm to be "night" for lower nighttime rates. Cool -- if they have usable service where you need it and you plan to talk a lot after 7 pm. But you likely won't hear about that from CR for months because of the lead time it takes to put the magazine together. What I hear of the Web site is that it is not particularly quicker with the news, either. If you talk a lot, don't bother with prepaid -- most is sufficiently expensive that by the time you're talking hundreds of minutes, it's much more expensive to go prepaid than it is to get a contract with anyone. It's not possible to give simple "Get [carriername]!" advice. It's just too individual a choice for us to make it for you. Verizon has an excellent network, but you may just happen to be in a low spot for them -- and, anyway, going with Verizon will mean buying a couple of phones and (likely) signing up for contracts. If you've been with Cingular since it was AT&T, chances are you have old AT&T TDMA phones, not the newer Cingular GSM phones. Since Cingy is no longer building out their TDMA network, it may simply be a matter of getting newer GSM phones for better coverage (try online auction sites for phones that may be usable but not brand-new and expensive). T-Mo seems to offer some great deals, but -- well, they have to. They claim they just about doubled coverage in my Twin Cities area, yet coverage (according to their coverage map) in my St. Paul neighborhood still is marginal. Who cares how cheap it is if it doesn't work where you want it? And, for that matter, you can hit the Cingular Web site or call their customer service (I know...), preferably at a slower time of the day, and poke around asking about cheaper plans. New ones are being introduced all the time; there might be something out there that makes more sense for you now.

WOLF repair - do you use only factory authorized service?

If you are under warranty, Wolf will only pay their own people. My DF range had blue enamel chipping at 4.5 years which is a known wolf issue but out of warranty. Wolf would give me the part(liner) but could not give an estimate for the work only that it would start at $800. I had the same issue with my Elux wall oven and had the local repair place come out and they charged about $525 for parts and labor under my extended warranty. I got the idea if I was paying out of pocket , it would cost less. They had no problem with giving a fixed estimate. It is difficult in my area to get anybody else to do Wolf repairs.

Autumn, I don't think you need cooking classes. I never knew how to cook anything until I moved out of the house. My mom was seriously OCD and wouldn't let us in the kitchen. I literally taught myself how to cook basics with a cookbook called "The I Never Cooked Before Cookbook". It explained everything. For example, when it told you to boil something, it had photos of what boiling water looks like. It had photos to explain the difference between chopping, slicing, dicing and mincing. It was incredibly helpful since I didn't even know how to anything. I think I could pour cereal and make taste. I had never even made cookies before. I'm certainly no gourmet cook but after familiarizing yourself with the basics, you can start throwing things together with some success without taking a class, imho. Like, after cooking a few Mexican dishes using recipes, you learn the basic ingredients, flavor profiles for sauces and seasonings, and then just start throwing things together using those basics in different ways. Using beans, rice, various hot sauces and seasonings often used in Mexican dishes, some chiles, and then a variety of vegetables, you can make sautes, soups, salads, casseroles, whatever using meat/fish/poultry as your protein or even the cheese (if you're vegetarian or want to do a vegetarian meal once in awhile) or the beans (ditto for vegan eating). When I do this, things might not be the least bit authentic to that cuisine, and I substitute a lot so I don't have to run to the store for something, but if you have a pantry of basics, it's not that hard to throw together something tasty. I hate grocery shopping so I do wish someone would do that for me. I sometimes send DH but he always gets some odd stuff and spends too much, lol. And I really don't like thinking up what to cook so I'll often have DH grab the protein out of the freezer. Whatever he grabs, I cook. Or I'll just reach in and close my eyes and grab something. Batch cooking does help. I often will cook up a big pot of rice (usually a wild/brown rice combo) and keep a container in the fridge to heat up as a side or throw in a soup or casserole. I do the same with dry beans, peas and bulgurs. I always have couscous and quinoa on hand because they cook up quick if I'm out of rice. So sides are easy. A variety of fresh veggies and a few bags in the freezer of Asian and California blends make it easy to throw a veggie side dish together. I buy cleaned/bagged salad mixes, mixed greens, and baby spinach making it quick and easy to put together for a salad or toss in the last few minutes of a stir-fry or saute. And multi-meal planning works well. If I make a roast, I save some for French Dip sandwiches the next night. Or I might boil up a chicken or two and use the breasts for stir-fry and the meat off the rest of it for chicken enchiladas or some other casserole or a soup. At least once a week dinner is my own Muscoe soup or casserole using the stuff that is starting to go but isn't bad enough to throw out. Thanks for that, bpathome, as I just call it Clean Out the Fridge Food. Muscoe sounds more purposeful. We don't eat out much. I can't see paying $20 for a meal that I can make for $5 at home. And I figure the time to go there, order, wait, eat, and go home takes longer than it does for me to cook and clean up. I don't have a cooking gene or special skills. I just decided to be fearless in the kitchen. Most things you make, if they don't turn out right, are salvageable somehow. The rare times it's not, the dog enjoys a treat. :) I think of it as a way to play.

Haha 2katz!! We are not cranky old people but 2 or 3 months ago we switched to CC. Here they use ATT towers and another, i think T Mobile. i double checked on the ATT since that is what we were using. So why oay more? We are paying less and actually are getting more. We were also needing to update our phones and got a better price on those too. so far, no problems.

eta: yes it is att and t mobile towers. i just checked to make sure i gave correct info 😁

Consumer Cellular also uses Verizon if thats the best network in a particular area. If there’s heavy traffic on a particular network the Consumer Cellular customers getted bumped off in favor of the full price AT&T, Verizon, etc paying customers. I was going to switch but decided not to risk that kind of situation as long as DH uses his phone for business.

I have T-Mobile. I adore the people with this company. The last guy I talked to said, ”If you have to call back, I hope I get to speak to you again”.

Anyway, they are our only option…..we have hills blocking signal on all sides. Their billing is flat rate, though, which is nice! I did CC as a fill-in, but I NEED the hot-spotand unlimited data, which, at the time, they did not offer. I believe they do now. They had also cancelled the tablet service, but may have that now, too.

I use Mint Mobile which rides the T-Mobile backbone. Fabulously cheap at $15 month paid by the year in advance ($180). Unlimited talk and text, 4GB data.

Luckily we have never been bumped or had any problens, thus far. i honestly cant tell any difference. My husband also uses his phone for his business. we never had problems with att and dtill have internet through then. Our cell bill went down substantially.

I use Boost, pay monthly with no contract, a flat $50 and no statement to decipher. Been happy enough with it.

Verizon, but I live in a rural area and it is the one that gets the best coverage in black out areas although when I had AT and T, it was ok.

Verizon. Has best coverage here and I never have issues. My bill is the same every month, so I’m not sure what is going on with you. I have unlimited talk and text and then 4GB data. I thought about upping my data to ulimited data but then the pandemic happened and I had no more travel. I pay about $64 per month for this and I think I get a small discount for state employee. DH’s phone is paid through work.

i use Verizon @ 51.00 a month. The service works well in my area. I have unlimited talk & text with 2 GB data. Any unused data from the current month will roll over to the next month which gives me on average 3 GB per month, more than plenty. I have a Verizon Hot Spot via Verizon as well, the service on it is sloooow. Personally, I don’t think it’s worth the $$ but it’s paid for by my job.

I recently switched to Verizon unlimited at $75/mo... hmmmm... I did get a $300 gift card incentive that I can use toward the monthly payments. Once that runs out, it appears I need to shop around.

I used to have AT&T, and it was a mess. That company is so far behind in everything it does, it seems.

We have Verizon with unlimited data. Our bills are totally straightforward. We have six phones on the plan - $30/month per line and another $4 in tax and fees per line.

Tracfone here - about $24/month unlimited talk & text and their network is very good. I've never had a dropped call that came from my end - it's always been the iPhone/AT&T users in my family. No itemized bills for my plan, just a fixed monthly charge and that's it - no paperwork involved at all. I use autopay.

They have a points rewards system now and I use those to pay for my mom's little flip phone we keep activated for emergencies.

You don't even have to buy their phones either, you can bring your own.

Not sure about the data, since I don't need unlimited and barely use the monthly amount of gigs I have now.

2katz4me, in my experience, it's usually a pattern that is recognized by the user. One of my friends always loses service when she enters a certain room in her home.

And one of my sisters travels frequently and somehow knows when cell service will be sketchy even when we're talking. I've never thought to ask her how she knows--I think she just is accustomed to this being part of her traveling life.
