Help! How do I plant grass on sand, what do I have to do?
Comments (4)Maybe related or can point you in the right direction. I recently visited an area resort on Cape Cod where a golf course was being renovated. On a tour of the facility I asked why there was so much sand being put down and where the loam or topsil was. They put down atleast 8" of a 80% sand and 20% seed mix...and no loam or soil! Pretty sure it was rolled out. They were planting bent grass (tee boxes, fairways, greens) and bluegrass on the first cut. True they have drainage and irrigation, but I was surprised they were using a mix with primarily sand....See MoreBought 2 boxed HTs....what do I do, please?
Comments (5)If they are boxed roses in the square box they are bare root planted in a growing medium. While many suggest removing them from the box and soaking for a few days, I recommend poking holes in the box and soaking the box and all until the box is completely saturated. While in the box, tiny feeder roots have begun to grow. Removing them from the box also removes the feeder roots. The intent of the box is to plant it, box and all, to prevent disturbing the developing roots and eliminate the stress to the plant caused when planting a bare root. But, experience has shown the dry box will still be identifible two-three years down the road. It often contains the roots and prevents them from growing into the surrounding soil. Not so if you poke holes in it and completely saturate the box by soaking. The more surface exposed to the soil, the faster the box decomposes. Those I plant that way are completely decomposed by the end of the first season in the ground. Saturating means water the plant should have is not soaked up by the box. Being wet helps it break down faster also. As a bonus, any feeder roots formed already will not be disturbed lessening transplant shock and stress. Usually new top growth will not be affected or need to be removed. If you plan on keeping the boxed roses for awhile before planting, poke a small hole in the top and water it. The box will become wet and sag some but the growing medium will not dry out. I've seen unsold boxed roses in the original box in mid June, four to five feet tall and blooming. Unlike body bagged roses, boxed roses will root absorbing the nutrients in the growing medium....See MoreValve Box is a Mess - What Do I Do? (pictures)
Comments (33)Thanks, Carol. Well, the result of my overnight valve leaking test are in! Not too bad. Bottom line: If I extrapolate the results from last night to a full day, those valves are leaking just under 5 gallons in a 24 hour period. Given my current water/sewer rates, about 4 cents a day. I'm still going to replace all the diaphragms though since they are so old. More to prevent a huge failure vs this weeping issue I have. For anyone who stumbles across this string (thank you, Carol, for starting it!). Here is my information: Toro Flo Pro Valve: Model #284-16-04 Replacement Diaphragm Part Number: 89-9861 Replacement Solenoid Part Number: 89-0114 As of this writing, 8/3/22, both replacement part #s are available on Sprinklerwarehouse.com If I ever replace those valves, I was told by Toro that the Jar Top valve part number 53708 is the current replacement. I checked and it is available on Amazon. If I don't have to replace those valves, I'm not going to. I'm a DIYer and that job, although doable, would be a pain....See MoreIs this a fair price for a Heat Pump / what electric box do Ineed
Comments (6)Looks like a member company of Nordyne family of HVAC. Two ton condenser has been quoted. What size do you currently have including size of heat strip? I never ever recommend purchasing HVAC thru a big box store especially Sears. Usually a rip off. I would suggest getting a quote on a Trane or AmStd. I will not make a comment on your electrical service. Best to a qualified electrical company. Best practices say on a heat pump system, condenser, air handler, and strip electric heat should all be placed on separate circuits. IMO...See MoreCandice
