Comments (7)Is there anything more beautiful than old-garden roses? I think not. So worthy of looking at them over and over. I love, love, love Petite Orleannaise! The lavender and pink colors on it are dreamy. I must visit the Heritage some day soon! Masha, you are an angel to keep putting all your pretty photos on this site for us to enjoy. Comments (11)I agree that in general Centifolias are not as Cast Iron as Gallicas and Damasks but there are some excellent ones. I second Fantin Latour-it is wonderful the Minis...Petite Lisette is another good one. The pure Cents like Reine des Cenfeuilles and Rose des Peintres are definitly more problematic-they are supposed to be sports or cultivars of R. centifolia. Tour de Malakoff is good but huge. It is one I dormant spray on principle but I dont know if it needs it. Blanchefleur is a lovely white Centifolia-but obviously mixed background-that is a good one. I think it is interesting that the Moss sports do not suffer from the same spotty problems as the non mosses. Why dont I have Shailer Provence? People are always saying it is a wonderful rose. patricia...See MoreThose purple Hybrid China / Gallica / Centifolia roses
Comments (42)Virtually all "purple" roses can vary greatly depending upon all the usual issues...soil/water pH, nutrients, heat, intensity of light, moisture, etc. The only "purple" rose I've yet grown which didn't have been Cardinal Hume and Purple Buttons. All the others have expressed anything from almost white to almost the right color expected from them. Those pigments demand the right range of conditions to express themselvs appropriately. It hasn't mattered whether the rose was an OGR or a modern "purple". Some have behaved better when provided protection from the light and heat intensities. Some have required acidifying the soil, a few times to the extreme. Some have only provided the desired colors in very early springs or late falls during unusually cooler and wetter conditions....See MoreColors, flowers and plants, please let’s see them February, 2021
Comments (72)We may have just had two more inches of snow, and three feet on the ground, but it's spring and summer indoors. I haven't named it yet, but this is a baby pomegranate tree, about six weeks old. It's in a 2 1/2 pot, receiving sunlight at the window and artificial light from sunset to bedtime and my wakeup time until the sun strikes it. It's just sprouted from a pomegranate seed from a pomegranate from the grocery store for sheer fun and I have no expectations for it. The Ageratum That Will Not Die. Fed organically (20%) and synthetically, it just keeps blooming more nicely as the winter wears on. A "struggling" tropical hibiscus started in...November, I think? Named "Brandy." That's her individual name, not the cultivar. She was struggling a bit, but has recovered recently with keeping the soil moist (there's some cyanobacteria mats on the soil right now), and feeding a lot more than I normally would in February since she's under lights 18 hours a day....See MoreFormerly RBEHS Z10A/S17
