what type of decking material do you think is best?
Comments (3)I have an ipe deck behind my house. It a beautiful wood and looks almost like the hardwood flooring inside just continues out of doors. It is however, very costly (particularly if you go with concealed fasteners), somewhat difficult to work with, and it requires regular maintenence to keep it looking its best. My deck is treated with Penofin tropical wood oil. For the first two years, the deck has to be thoroughly cleaned and oiled every six months or so. After that, cleaning and oiling are supposed to be required only every 10 to 12 months --- but I can't confirm that, because I'm just coming up on two years. I think my deck looks like new. Anyway, I love the look of ipe, and to me, it's worth the effort. But it might not be to some people. Incidently, there is a Porches & Decks forum here on Garden Web. You can probably get some feedback there, too -- but some of the posters there are very opinionated and have differing views on all manner of things....See MoreWhat do you think of this kitchen design?
Comments (13)@Zalco/bring back Sophie! I'm so happy you stopped by to say hello! As you know, I took a break from Houzz but I'm slowly getting back into the flow of things. What surprises me is how drastically the number of posts has reduced, not just on the conversations side but in all the fourms. Am I just imagining things? It seems that a year or two ago there was double or triple the number of new posts per day. Did I miss something?...See MoreHouse Design Dilemma... What do you think about this?
Comments (23)Living the dream comes with a cost. We’ve been waiting months for our completed solar project to get inspected so they can inform HELCO. Then HELCO does their own inspection, more wait time. Ah, paradise. We’ve been here for about 30 years so have become accustomed the quirks of island living. There isn’t much of an infrastructure to support the many new comers, think traffic, parking etc… only adding to the tremendous delay times. Best of luck. Comments (18)I'm not a fan of any "decorative" niches. Imho, there is no reason to call out the niche (which just holds shampoo bottles and stuff), as a decor item. There are a couple designers (in these forums) who have said they don't even like niches because they are so prominent, and when filled with shampoo bottles, they surely don't look decorative. Strips of decorative tile, contrasting borders, and decorative niches are not necessary and don't add anything. I personally love the terrazzo, as I said before, but I would put it on the floor and keep the field tiles consistent and relatively plain, for all of the rest. It is a real splurge to make your shower "special" . Think about how much it costs to install a shower. I would choose something classic, classic, classic, and for me, that means simple....See Moreanj_p
