It was really wet in the garden today. How wet was it?

OK, so I am totally dating myself with that old Johnny Carson joke. But, it was so wet water came over the tops of my garden shoes. It was so wet when I stepped into the new bed I lost one of those shoes in the mud and had to fish it out. It was so wet my garden kitty stayed on dry concrete in the garage and did not walk with me. It was so wet most of the pics were made from the edges of the beds and of the beds themselves. (Sorry Sherry and anyone else needing rain-so wish you had some of this!!)

We got a little under 2 inches today. Around us though, people got over a foot. A real gusher..........Hands down Forest god is my favorite of these. They are all pretty, but the polychrome colors are so beautiful that it stands out in its simplicity.......... Your beds are full of color. Nice garden shots of them.................Maryl

Maryl, I know I will be lamenting having no rain in July and August but this rain is not a gentle mist-it comes in those gushers you referred to getting in your area.

So just to give you an idea of how ever-so-slightly obsessive I/we are being with this, we have not only been tarping the area when it rains, but we post-hole dug a couple of 'wells' and have been using the old pumps from our hydroponics setup to pump out some of the water. From Garden Pictures Note the water table, right after all the rain, only about an inch down! On the plus side, digging down 3ft or so gave me a good idea of my soil strata - after about a foot and a half I hit some clay that looked like I could sit down and throw a terra-cotta pot on the spot. But up until that point, it was (decreasingly) nice and dark brown and more crumbly. So I think my dirt is pretty good :) Hopefully adding my compost and raising te rows as much as possible will improve the drainage. We're also eventually planning on putting a dry streambed through the backyard. But as for the good news - after only 24 hours or so without water falling from the sky, the water table receded to about 5-6 inches down. Progress! Thanks for the advice, everybody - still don't know when I'll be able to start working out there, but hopefully it will be soon, as I have some little ones anxiously waiting! I won't do any damage to anything by walking on it 20 hours after seeding? With the weather we're having in the Lehigh Valley today, you'll be just fine. If you're squishing around out there, step lightly. Very lightly. If possible, fly over those particular wet areas. :-) Twenty hours in, the seed's still in pre-germination. Absolutely nothing has sprouted, or is really thinking about it yet (that starts around day 7 at the earliest). Through most of the lawn you'll just be increasing your seed/soil contact. For the first five or so days, don't be afraid to walk it if you need to. I wouldn't traipse around inspecting things, but if an area needs something, do it. After that, stay off it until October first, if possible. Ignore weeds.

There are some native plants that would work for you in that situation. Any of the cultivars of the Panicum Grasses, "Switch Grass" would do very well, they can take standing water, clay soil with poor drainage and drought periods. There are many cultivars that are very pretty. My favorite is 'Northwind' which is so vertical it looks ironed and a sort of deep olive green color. Looking at your picture, the vertical aspect would work in that kind of narrow space by the sidewalk the best. Another fairly vertical one is 'Heavy Metal' which is powder blue and there are some that turn red in fall as well. These get around waist or sometimes chest high not counting the blooms and the clumps get larger and prettier every year. They are very popular in the nursery trade and easy to find all different kinds of cultivars because native grass gardens are sort of an in thing currently. Some other low growing types of ornamental grass would be worth a try I think because they can be pretty forgiving. Physostegia, Spring Obedient Plant will take poor drainage and standing water. Hibiscus militaris, Halbert Leaf Hibiscus grows in freshwater marshes or shallow water and will also take poor drainage. It gets 3 to 8' tall Maximillian sunflower grows wild in ditches around here in slimy clay that later dries out hard as bricks so I know these would do well also but you'd want to plant something at the base which can get ratty looking toward the bottom part. It gets tall like a hollyhock, blooms in fall. Wild Ageratum "Blue Mist Flower" is another. Otherwise, you will have to build up higher. We did that in some areas with a couple of large loads of topsoil and sand and it solved the problem.

I worried about that too. In our build they used a product (the name is leaving me at the moment) for the subfloor that was impregnated with a wax. The water would pool but not absorb at all. We shop vac'ed multiple times and as we did the subfloor looked completely dry after being in standing water for days. Might check to see if a similar product was used on your house... Might ease your mine. Jen

Those garden shots are wonderful with all the color combinations. I agree with Maryl on Forest God. I can see why you were enabled with Tall Dark Stranger. Good color. The daylilies seem to like all the rain as they are lush with green foliage and many scapes and buds.

I agree with all said, love Forest God and great garden pics! You are definitely getting more rain than here. We got 2" last Thursday I think, another quarter inch Sunday. Supposed to rain yesterday but maps parted around our section like the Red Sea and we stayed dry. Supposed to rain every day til maybe Sunday. Got half my yard mowed yesterday, it looked like rain any time most of day tol late.

Bless your heart, Kate. Your plants are loving it even though it is the very devil for photos. And you are getting more today! I really like Forest God and Tall Dark Stranger is a lovely clump of luscious color. Diamond Shores is such a nice one and since it is new, next year will be even better. Your clumps in the roadside bed are giving lots of color even with the rain and you can tell the new bed will be a favorite because of all the beautiful color. Is that Lovely Isabella showing of the left of it? All your plants are just beautiful.

Now that's wet! We were supposed to get lots of rain yesterday and got nothing. Your should get lots of nice rebloom this year. The garden shots look great even if the lilies are wet. Easter Courtship and Diamond Shores are gorgeous. I've never gotten color that dark on Heartbeat of Heaven. In fact, I'm moving mine out because it nearly always looks so washed out. Isn't Tall Dark Stranger more reddish looking in person?

Oh yes, Julia, these plants do indeed like the rain, but so do the weeds and grass!! I cannot get in there to work!

Nancy, I have no idea how much rain has come in but it has been a lot!! Many of our counties are on Code Red alert which means flash flooding and dangerous flooding over roads. I am liking Forest God very much also-it came from Laura last year.

Kay, the blooms have shown great color although as I told you if you get close to them, they are very much rain damaged!! I think the plant you are talking about in that bed is Lady Dragon showing the last of its blooms.

Debra, Tall Dark Stranger may be more reddish if it ever sees sun! Truly, since it has been blooming, it has been cloudy and rainy!!

That's a lot of rain but how nice those beds look! Btw I'll take some rain )) Not that much. Our yard is in a low spot so when we get a lot of rain most of it turns into a lake.

Your new addition Diamond Shores is gorgeous. I also love the colors of Forest God. Ooh don't think I have ever seen Heartbeat of Heaven that dark here!

Thanks Brad. We have had lots of rain and more today!! Coming home through the backroads I had to turn around!!

Nat, if only I could send this rain your way. I have seen enough! Heartbeat of Heaven is in partial shade, cooler temps in the rain and no sun on it probably contributed to the darker color!

Turn around!! Don’t drown!! And so I did-after backing up a long hill which was no fun!!

I guess they say be careful what you wish for , but I am wishing for some of that rain you folks are all getting. We are sooooooo very dry here. Even when it does rain , it goes around our area . It can be so frustrating ,. I never wish I lived in a city except when we get long dry spells like this . Being on a well means we just can't water . I am so jealous of all that rain you folks are getting .

Forest God is just so beautiful !
