removing wood fixture from wall

We have this shrine in our house. We are not shrine people. Does anyone have any idea of how these things are installed, so that we can remove it with as little damage as possible? We would like to pass it on if we can get it down in one piece. It’s high quality wood and construction.

Have you tried pushing it upward? It might be fastened with a french cleat.

We have tried pushing it up, but with no luck. Uncertain whether it’s because that’s not how it’s attached or because we haven’t been able to fully break the caulk seal

If you are applying semi transparent stain, then it will be hard to get it to blend in without stripping the whole wall. A power washer will work, depending on how powerful it is. You can spray some stripper on there before you power wash it which will help.

A friend of mine came over and made the job easy for me. He was able to pry the architectural piece that was originally placed on a wood plaque, then painted to look all like one piece. This was the part I was after. The mosaic was on bottom wood plaque. I don't know why I didn't think of this in the beginning and therefore wasted time trying to pry off the tiles, while getting a dry grout facial at the same time ! These older architectural pieces like corbels and cornices are sold for a lot of money on eBay, and I wanted to save it badly, so I know I will be able to place it on another wood plaque in the future and make my mirror project. Thanks for the water tip. I never gave that any thought. If I run into this situation again I will give it a try. Thanks again:)

Glad I stumbled upon this post. I have screens from my neighbor's windows. I never thought of using them for anything. I kept them in my shed because I figured someone out there would come up with a good idea! I have the windows in hopes to have DH make me a greenhouse! They've been stored under my son's clubhouse for two years now. Once the clubhouse comes down, guess what's getting built? :) And I can't wait for it. Now I know what I can do with the screens! We moved to Florida from NY. The house we bought was so dark inside because of large overhangs from the roof which blocks sunlight and a large lanai running across the back wall which has a roof, no sunlight. We liked the house, but I couldn't stand how dark it was inside. Before we moved in, I call a Tubular Skylight company to get an estimate on installing them in the house. Recommendation was a large one in the kitchen ceiling ($500.00), small one in a bathroom off the hallway($250.00), a medium size in the family room off the kitchen ($325.). I can't tell you how bright this area is now. What I liked is they just go through your attic, make the openings and can position the tube (in the attic) toward south so we get bright light from sunrise to sunset. Over the past 6 yrs when we could afford more, we added to the laundry room (no windows), another bathroom (small skylight), the dining room. My house is so bright when you walk in you think there are spotlights all over the place. It took me a while, initially when the first ones were put in to get used to the high level of light. Looked like a new house! Before putting them in, we had to have our overhead lights lit all day. That costs a lot of money. I feel these tube skylights have paid for themselves in 5 yrs. Plus the house looks like a bright, inviting home. Everyone who walks in comments on how bright our home is. I would look into installing at least one large one in the kitchen, maybe a medium in the hall. So much less expensive than 'real skylights' and keeping the lights lit all day. Jane

Dag nap-it if only I could see through the thing i could be more help. Knowing if it was nailed,screwed or glued would really help. Oh well win some loose some.

I am betting on the french cleat type of install, since there are no screws visible. Maybe put a board across the bottom, and tap it good with a hammer. I am not seeing any caulk in the picture, but, even paint, would make it stick a bit.

There is no standard way that these things are attached. It could even have had the back attached to the wall with screws, and then the screw heads were covered over with trim. Have you looked everywhere, including on top of it, for evidence of any fasteners, including holes that have been puttied over?

Try to find out if there are any 2 by 4’s behind your drywall, maybe the wooden structure was attached to it with nails. Consider taking an exacto knife or putty knife to break any seal around the wood first. If you end up having to cut it out, it is really not a big deal to replace a piece of drywall. You are obviously going to have to experiment how to remove this structure, as it is a puzzle at this time.

Why would it be chalked? That's odd. A rubber mallet to the bottom ought to loosen it. If it's not a cleat or similar metal key hole/ screw arrangement it is fastened from the back. What's behind that wall? Not a closet? Get a tall ladder get above it might be screwed in toe nail style. It's an oak box with crown/trim attached. Pretty simple, basic really,. Not a rare treasure. I would be more concerned with the wall damage taking it down than the box.
