I think I'm over the David Austin roses
Comments (115)Deborah, some of the bare roots I got from DA in 2021 were tiny and not great, either. I thought the same things as you. Luckily, the two that were small and sad took off in the 2nd year. I don't grow James L Austin but I've heard others compare them in the same way as you. I like fragrance too much sosososososososososososososososososososososososososososososososososososososososososososososososososososososososososososososososo So I decided to just try GO. And I'm glad I did, he's aa becoming a favorite. Houzz gremlins are at v again. I'm glad aa DA replaced yours. If mine hadn't shaped up last yearyear, I'd be in the same position as you....See MoreEustacia Vye and Gabriel Oak are on David Austin US website
Comments (29)Steven, you recently wrote about a rose road trip. I would encourage you to visit his June open house. It's a remarkable garden and such an opportunity to see what does well without coddling. He sells the majority of his roses then, as opposed to mail-order. It is difficult to grow roses in Z5 to as large specimens as other own root vendors, although he may custom graft to multiflora.. He did that last year when the late coldsnap hit in June and killed some plants. If you are interested drop an email and avoid the conversation if you're more comfortable with that. He's very responsive to email. The plants I've received are small, but considering he was the only source for them and they've all thrived and really grown well, I'm not so concerned. Even as small plants put in the ground in the Fall, they all survived the winter. Fingers crossed that 2020's rarities do the same. I hope to pick up this year's in June and grow them up myself....See MoreDavid Austin Rose - Gabriel Oak (1st year)
Comments (11)Thanks for sharing this - it’ll be a while before mine bloom and so good to see it here. That’s interesting about your comparison to James L Austin. I’ve held off ordering it because of the reported light fragrance but I’ve enjoyed seeing your post of JLA and think I need to add it as well....See MoreDavid Austin Rose Photo Share
Comments (92)Among my 33 own-root Austin roses, there are few scents that I can stick my nose in 24/7. Leander, St. Cecilia, Mary Magdalene, the Dark Lady, W.S. 2000. Below bouquet was picked July 24: Radio Times, sweet and pure heaven (not too face-powder perfume like Comte de Chambord), medium pink below. It's steady fragrant when topped with pea-gravel. Evelyn: sweet peach, light pink Munstead Wood: sweet berries, dark red. For beauty & scent & vigor, Radio Times is #1 Radio Times get my vote as the most photogenic. Below pic. was taken this July 24: Below pic. was taken back in 2011 when I first bought Radio Times as 1st year own-root: Bush has pretty leaves & healthy as 11th-year-own-root, pic. taken this July 14, I don't spray:...See MoreHoang Ton - Zone 9a
