Cleaning Hardwood Floors
Comments (22)I'll suggest a) determine the manufacturer of your hardwood floors, and 2) follow their maintenance and cleaning instructions and recommendations. Some flooring manufacturers give 20, 25 and 35 year guarantees on their pre finished hardwood flooring, that tells me it would be wise to pay attention to their cleaning recommendations. Here's where one producer, Mercier, lists their instructions: http://www.mercier-wood-flooring.com/en_us/literature-and-documentation, look for the maintenance guide. I'll quote some points from their guide: Step 1 ...vacuum regularly. The vacuum cleaner removes dust and abra- sive substances from the surface. Frequency: As often as necessary Step 2 Mercier cleaner on a mop (micro fiber), swab in the same direc- tion as the floorboards. ... Never use fabric softener (sheets or liquid) when washing mop covers, these products leave a greasy film on the surface of the floor. Wash the mop cover when it is dirty .Warning Never use wax, household detergent, wood conditioner or oil-based soap on the floor. These products can tarnish, damage the finish and leave a greasy film, making the floor slippery and difficult to maintain. Mixtures of water and vinegar are not recommended for cleaning prefinished flooring, since vinegar has an oxidizing effect on the finish....See MoreCleaning Hardwood floors?
Comments (10)Most installers of poly coated floors say to use a quick spray of dilute vinegar on a swiffer or a dust mop and run over them with that. I had my oak floors redone with poly about 20 years ago and that's what I use....and I use 409 on anything icky. So far no problems....and I have a much used old oak table that is well coated with poly and I regularly wipe it with 409 and in about 37 years there is no problem, no marks, rings nor any signs of wear. And this is the coffee table that gets feet with shoes put on it and grand kids eating from and wine glasses and drink glasses. Poly is sturdy stuff!! Before my floors were redone, they had a shellac finish, under carpet. That was a very fragile surface and certainly "bloomed" when it got water on it if there was not wax. Poly is different....wax ( like in bona) just smears on the surface. ( I mention the under carpet because when I removed the carpet the floors were in very good shape!)...See MoreHow to clean hardwood floors with area rugs
Comments (18)Another Bona user here. My housekeepers don't clean under the pad often, so about twice a year (well, sometimes it ends up about once a year), I roll up the area rug (even the big ones), vacuum the pad well on both sides, roll it up and clean under it with Bona. When thoroughly dry, replace pad and rug. I was told you shouldn't use vinegar with water as it will eventually wear off the finish. The Bona mop (the one with the refillable reservoir) is great because you can fill the reservoir, snap it in, spray and mop with the pad attached with Velcro. Then wash the pads when done and you are ready for next time. I just replaced my Bona mop after about 15 years of use, so worth the investment. Pads last a long time too....See Morewhat to use to clean hardwood flooring
Comments (20)Nope...not weird. That's actually normal. Feet are greasy. Skin oils are shiny (or dull in comparison to the finish). Skin oils will push through socks....ick I know...but this is the nature of having skin. And cooking oils splash into the air and can land up anywhere on that same LEVEL!!! Yep. With open floor plans, cooking oils can land 400ft away. And anything oily (that is left to dry out) becomes tacky. And when it becomes TACKY it GRABS dust. And the stuck-dust becomes gritty. And then that starts to feel GUMMY. Sound familiar? So that's why we recommend a "slightly damp" mop (water only) about 1x PER WEEK. This picks up plenty of the dust and prevents it from getting gritty and gummy. See where I'm going with this? So far, your explanation is SPOT ON normal. There is nothing "wrong" with what is happening. In fact it is what I would expect to happen if a damp cleaning is occurring every 6-8 weeks. Add in the "water only" damp cleaning and see if you can get these floors to feel better in between the "cleaning" events. Adding in a different cleaner into your schedule won't do anything for the "week later" feeling. Only by adding in the slightly damp mop every week will reduce this feeling if icky-sticky floors....See Morelindac92
