Faux Coffered Ceiling / Wallpaper ideas?

My builder quoted me $25,000 upgrade for a coffered ceiling install including materials for our great room with 17 foot ceilings. That's a bit much for us at this time - but we really want to make the great room feel unique.

Any other ideas out there to help bring the cost down?

We could do crown moldings but feel the room would benefit with something more pronounced.

I think that's a tray ceiling, not coffered (at least, that's what it's called where I am).

Is this in style where you are? Maybe context will help... i.e. size of home, exterior design, interior, etc. Maybe this is perfectly appropriate for this particular style of home and its location.

I seldom use the word "dated" but to me, that ceiling is something from early 2000's and / or the faux Tuscan period. How old is this model home? it certainly is not unique or even unusual to have a 2-tone tray ceiling from that period of time... though I don't think too many are being built like that now.... at least, not where i live.

I would do a substantial crown and a white ceiling. That will give you the opportunity to make the room a show stopper. A white ceiling and crown molding are always (in my opinion) in style.

Thank you... the home was built in 2012. Yes, that is a tray ceiling but we were hoping to do a coffered ceiling. Maybe a nice crown is the way to go...

Hi Oceanna, LOL - sometimes I get stubborn and don't ask for help! Don't ask me about the time that I thought re-sodding a lawn would be simple (you have no idea how heavy grass can be) Here are my thoughts regarding the paintable wallpaper. I don't think that it would withstand high traffic/heavy use areas where there would be the potential for dents and cuts. I have mine in a guest bathroom and am currently installing it in the adjoining bedroom. These rooms are only used occasionally. However, it is a rather inexpensive experiment - I think that I only paid $25.00 per double roll at Creative Wallcoverings. You could order a sample and play around with it. I also think that the durability would depend on the quality/type of paint that was used. I used a flat wall paint because it was what I had on hand. I would think that in an area such as a kitchen, a satin or semi-gloss would be a better choice. Regarding the installation - I glued/nailed the chair rail right over the wallpaper without any problems. I did not remove the baseboard; just papered the wall with about 2 inches extra hanging at the bottom. Then, using my razor and the wallpaper smoother, I simply cut the paper to fit. I changed the razor after 2 cuts - they get dull very quickly. Just let me know if you have any more questions. Under $30 roll is not difficult to find. There are some very nice papers available in that price range. Have a small space? Try eBay. Many times you can get high-end wallpapers in small quantities for only a little $$. I did that with a Thibault paper not too long ago (although I don't have it hung yet...LOL). If I were trying to stay in the under $30 camp, I'd go with traditional designs--damasks, toile, stripes...things that don't go out of style. Anaglypta and lincrusta papers are always interesting and not necessarily expensive--although hanging them can be a challenge! I am a HUGE fan of Bradbury papers. There's absolutely nothing more beautiful that a room full of their wallpaper. I have several friends who have used it and it's FABULOUS although pricey. They are now starting to manufacture some mid-century design papers that are way cool, too... Most notably, I love some of their new kitchen designs: They're just fantastic. I used a less expensive paper in my laundry/mud room. It's a toile and I only used it on one wall. It's much more fun that just a painted wall and adds so MUCH character to this old house (which originally had EVERY room papered). Wallpaper is great stuff. There's nothing like it for adding texture or interest to a room.

Ottertail, Do you love the border and is it something that will add to your enjoyment? I think you home is your castle and it should be decorated for you and your family's enjoyment. Here's my own "It's Out of Style" faux pas: My DH and I recently built and moved into a new home. I used brass for my door hardware (balwin brass), my kitchen hardware and my lamps (vintage stiffel)/lighting (waterford). I love the warmth of brass (not the yellow, shinny, fake stuff) and I love how it fits in with my tradtional decor. Now, I'm sure there are some who would walk in my home and say to themselves (and a few even out loud), "Why did she put out of style brass in her new house?" While others would say, "I love that you went with the brass" and would admire me for going with what I like. My friends like me for who I am and appreciate the fact I beat to my own drum. Bottom line, brass is what was right for me and my family. Add the border! Get on the bandwagon! Start decorating to your own beat! P.S. I used chrome fixtures in my bathrooms:-0 They look perfect with my silver vanity pieces, but that's another story for another post.

@DIS thanks for the photos. Silverponte does turn a bit green in the space as u mentioned. I am open for ideas. This is actually going to be the family room instead of the living room because there is not another family room space. Because there is so much natural light I was even thinking of a more opaque color like a bluish/gray. My sofa is a light light gray herringbone, will probably get a new rug and coffee table. My current accessories are a lot of navy/white and silver. I have a dark wooden bar that will go somewhere and sadly, I don’t think the piano is staying (but really praying she will not give it to her son 😉) so I can really do whatever works with the colors off the foyer. This room opens to the kitchen, dining and sitting space which will likely be a neutral beige, due to the maple wood kitchen cabinets and granite. What color are these navy walls? I might love that for an accent color in the kitchen dining sitting combo room (the back window wall which will be the sitting room). Sorry, I know I am getting off track from the initial post topic!!

Google coffered ceilings....or post a picture....without a picture of your space any specific advice is just a guess...

When a contractor gives me a big dollar quote, I start asking question about materials, estimated time, and methods. It's a good idea to get other quotes.

If a tray ceiling, it's likely that your contractor is going to use dimensional lumber to frame (<-- link) the outer "ring" and then cover the frame with drywall followed by paint and - trim? (looks like crown in that fuzzy picture). The other expense may be renting scaffolding for such a high ceiling.

If a coffered ceiling, it's strictly a trim carpentry project (<-- link) that involves installing the "boxes" and then the sides. I would imagine the materials would be higher for this type of ceiling.

What are the dimensions for the room? We might be able to estimate material and labor costs
