Faux Coffered Ceiling / Wallpaper ideas?

My builder quoted me $25,000 upgrade for a coffered ceiling install including materials for our great room with 17 foot ceilings. That's a bit much for us at this time - but we really want to make the great room feel unique.

Any other ideas out there to help bring the cost down?

We could do crown moldings but feel the room would benefit with something more pronounced.

I think that's a tray ceiling, not coffered (at least, that's what it's called where I am).

Is this in style where you are? Maybe context will help... i.e. size of home, exterior design, interior, etc. Maybe this is perfectly appropriate for this particular style of home and its location.

I seldom use the word "dated" but to me, that ceiling is something from early 2000's and / or the faux Tuscan period. How old is this model home? it certainly is not unique or even unusual to have a 2-tone tray ceiling from that period of time... though I don't think too many are being built like that now.... at least, not where i live.

I would do a substantial crown and a white ceiling. That will give you the opportunity to make the room a show stopper. A white ceiling and crown molding are always (in my opinion) in style.

Thank you... the home was built in 2012. Yes, that is a tray ceiling but we were hoping to do a coffered ceiling. Maybe a nice crown is the way to go...

dgmarie--I sure am tempted at times to hire out for some of these difficult projects, but I even doubt there'd be anyone available for this in this little town--it's full of small town charm but has its limitations! Most of these sorts of jobs have to be done by people brought in from Santa Fe, which kicks up the cost quite a bit. We've got to get our chimney repaired by a historic mason ($$$$$$), so I'll have to make up for it by struggling with the more mindless but messy jobs like this. tishtoshnm--It sounds like your husband has an interesting profession! We drove through/by Socorro last month on our way to Tucson, and every time we go by there I see all the old, historic buildings from the interstate and it makes me want to take a trip down there to check out the sights. Now that I know there will be a house museum I'm definitely going to make a point of going. When I get this ceiling job done I'll post the pictures of all the great, old Victorian wallpapers I found on our walls. That's another reason I'm doing this myself rather than having someone else do it; if you're into historic preservation as we are, there really is no better way to get to know the evolution of your home than by doing this kind of work yourself. We found out more about changes to our house over the decades merely by removing wallpaper than any other way so far! pbrisjar--yes, I'm trying to keep the finished product in mind! I struggled with the floors and it made a world of difference, and so will this. Back to work now......

@DIS thanks for the photos. Silverponte does turn a bit green in the space as u mentioned. I am open for ideas. This is actually going to be the family room instead of the living room because there is not another family room space. Because there is so much natural light I was even thinking of a more opaque color like a bluish/gray. My sofa is a light light gray herringbone, will probably get a new rug and coffee table. My current accessories are a lot of navy/white and silver. I have a dark wooden bar that will go somewhere and sadly, I don’t think the piano is staying (but really praying she will not give it to her son 😉) so I can really do whatever works with the colors off the foyer. This room opens to the kitchen, dining and sitting space which will likely be a neutral beige, due to the maple wood kitchen cabinets and granite. What color are these navy walls? I might love that for an accent color in the kitchen dining sitting combo room (the back window wall which will be the sitting room). Sorry, I know I am getting off track from the initial post topic!!

Complicated wall paper patterns have the potential to visually shrink a small space even smaller. Could you add a high horizontal "chair rail" on the wall above the countertop / sink level and wallpaper only that back wall behind and above the sink and toilet with the mirror covering part of the wall over the sink and open shelves over the toilet. See how you like that before doing the other two walls. If you do only above the "chair rail", you get the pattern you like added without having the design over power your small room. You could pick a color from within the wallpaper for the rest of the wall. You might even consider a vertical "wainscoting" or paneling for below the "chair rail". You might even consider a faux window on one wall. @palimpsest I agree, but the openings on either side of the fireplace lead through to the dining room on the other side. The side that is being blocked by the Christmas tree in the first photo has a built in cabinet with counter and book case that separates two rooms, but the right side if the fireplace can be passed through (although just the dogs do, we dont walk through it). There is a bedroom upstairs on the other side of the fireplace wall. I’ve seen a house on my street where they closed off the rooms completely from each other, but I don’t think that’s something I want to do here. Here is the reverse side of the fireplace wall (seen from our living room) - it is usually the dining room, but it is currently filled with stuff bc of the kitchen and floor work going on. There is a central courtyard that the dining room opens up onto, so I like the light that it lets through.. the room I’m putting the panels in faces north and the roof extends over the front patio area, so it’s quite dark. Especially since we haven’t added lights yet in there!

Google coffered ceilings....or post a picture....without a picture of your space any specific advice is just a guess...

When a contractor gives me a big dollar quote, I start asking question about materials, estimated time, and methods. It's a good idea to get other quotes.

If a tray ceiling, it's likely that your contractor is going to use dimensional lumber to frame (<-- link) the outer "ring" and then cover the frame with drywall followed by paint and - trim? (looks like crown in that fuzzy picture). The other expense may be renting scaffolding for such a high ceiling.

If a coffered ceiling, it's strictly a trim carpentry project (<-- link) that involves installing the "boxes" and then the sides. I would imagine the materials would be higher for this type of ceiling.

What are the dimensions for the room? We might be able to estimate material and labor costs
