Comments (16)Ah, milkmen....now there's a tradition lost on most of America. I really need a milkman. My son drinks nothing but milk and is capable of going through a gallon a day if left unchecked. Unfortunately, city code says I can't have my own cow in the backyard. On a side note, we watched "Up" last night with the kids, and it's priceless for the dog humor alone. I think our pup may be mellowing in her old age. This past week we left her unattended inside the house because of bad storms rolling through, and I'm happy to report that all curtains, carpet, pillows, and garbage cans were intact and undisturbed. When we first moved to our house 2 years ago, we had problems with puppy digging holes in the yard. She would take her morning cookie (milk bone biscuit) outside, and promptly bury it. We curbed the bad habit by only allowing cookies after she came back inside at night. Disturbingly, the dig holes didn't stop. We couldn't figure out what was causing her to continue to dig. One day when I was on vacation & working outside, I paused to chat to the passing mail carrier, whom Midnight loved to terrorize with her "go away" bark. I told the mail carrier our puppy's name and explained that she's truly harmless. The mail carrier said, "No worries---she's my best friend now that I toss her a Milk Bone every day!"...See Morebye-bye winter
Comments (3)Hi Dianne Happy harvesting! And I agree with you, it is getting very hot... I grew the purple sprouting broccoli and while it produced shoots, they were not enough to justify the place in the garden, took a long time when it was colder, now it just maybe too hot. Comments (2)Nice to hear from you, Bonnie. I am sorry to hear your Dad's in now in Hospice, tho I know he will get good care there and perhaps ease some stress from you. Its so hard to see this happen, I know. I'm with your DH on the lobster. Poor thing, I can't even look at his picture. He should be in the ocean enjoying life. (how's that for trying to send you on a guilt trip. LOL) hugs, Karen...See MoreBye, Bye Miss American Pie-Single Shot Grand Rapids
Comments (16)I finally had a chance to seek out the original Newsweek article. Just as I suspected. Turns out Newsweek's definition of "dying" constitutes small declines in overall population coupled with declines in number of people under 18, also relatively small. All of which could be turned around rapidly. Or maybe these cities were over crowded to begin with. Or maybe it's just that people in general are having fewer children. Heck, all of Europe may be dying if that's your only metric. I'm not sure that having a growing population should be considered a definition of "living" either. It could also be a cause of stress. Many cities in S. America are in horrible shape and they have tons of young people. Don't get me wrong, I know that MI was one of the only states that lost overall population in the last ten years according to the recent census. That's the impetus for these articles. But there's also a principle known as "how to lie with statistics" or in this case, how to overreach. I'm one of the ones who left. Thousands of young people are leaving due to not being able to have jobs. But MI has so much going for it, as this video suggests. Those tough folks who manage to stick it out will create a new future under the new circumstances. I almost hate to tell everyone how nice MI is because then you'll all want to go there and live. Michiganders actually like to keep that our little secret. Yeah, dying state, total rust belt, wouldn't want to come here and crowd all our beaches and roads and parking lots and public facilities and stores and drive up home prices. Just drive on by, nothing to see here. Um hello, being relatively uncrowded and not filled up with people is exactly why Grand Rapids is such a nice place. All the big city amenities, much less of the hassles. If you manage to get to live in West Michigan, you are PRIVLEDGED, not dying....See MoreGargamel
