Dining room sideboard

I'm looking for a sideboard, preferably with upper and lower storage, and all I can find is cupboards on the lower half, sometimes with a few drawers. I am DONE with lower kitchen cabinets for all the reasons we all know, and want only lower drawers in the kitchen. Naturally I want only lower drawers in a dining room buffet/sideboard. But I can't find any designs online where the lower half is all drawers, no cabinets. Does anyone even make such a product? Or would I need a cabinet-maker & my own design?

Keep in mind that most sideboards aren't going to be designed to have drawers that accommodate large serving pieces. I have a lot of china that will not fit a typical set of drawers, nor would it be safe - when you pull out a drawer you are pulling out all its contents, which, depending on the fragility of the contents, may not always be a good idea. If you are only envisioning storing things like tablecloths and non fragile items, then a nice antique chest of drawers could work as well as provide visual appeal.

I would also keep in mind why people like kitchen drawers over cupboards is because modern kitchen cabinet drawers are designed to be user-friendly, with specially engineered pulls and hardware to make it easy to pull out and close heavy drawers crowded with food or dishes or pots and pans. Sideboards and dressers are not going to be engineered to provide that kind of ease of handling.

Find nice dresser. I have a marble top dresser from the 40's that I used as a sideboard for a while. You can add a hutch top if you want upper storage.

Well I can say all the holiday bins are packed up, labeled and put back in the loft. Except for the last few holiday ornaments I couldn't resist at the 75% off sale at Macy's yesterday :). And, I finally surrendered to the prevailing wisdom and bought one of those stand up gift wrap containers. Wow, what I've been missing all these years! I love the way it holds so many rolls so neatly, and the little container on top for tape and scissors-yowza. Also at Target I found the ribbon organizer boxes on sale for $5. Neat stackable version too, so I bought a couple and was able to corral all the lovely rolls of ribbon I bought for next year, put them inside boxes on dowels and in the bottom tray put in all my holiday labels and a sharpie marker. Now ribbon and labels are together and ready to go, along with wrapping paper. In fact I like the paper storage enough that I'm going to get one for my everyday paper and clear out the under bed box I've been using. Best of all my husband was happily surprised that I did not increase the total bin count at all. When he came out to start putting them in the loft he was giving me a hard time but he was pleased to confirm my claim that I did not buy one single additional tote or bin! Ann

@dhygarden, I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner. It's so hard to recover from the loss of a good friend. I also lost a good friend and neighbor at the end of October last year. She was fighting ovarian cancer and seemed to be doing quite well when she suddenly passed away from a stroke. I see her husband and their little Yorkie, Oliver whenever I walk by the house. Oliver sometimes comes running over to visit if his "dad" is working in the garage. He has a crush on my Siamese. I hope you are healing. I enjoyed reading everyone's posts and seeing your photos as well. I also fell in love with Ingrid's little dog! I adore cats and dogs.

The antiqued coffee is beautiful. That would be my choice if I was buying that table. I'd then get the sideboard in the antiqued black. I prefer to mix them up. To match-poo doesn't work for me. I think looking like a set "cheapens" the look, rather than each piece being able to stand on its own. Those chairs are nice and would really go well with the table. They would definitely create a much more formal atmosphere/look, though, than the casual you say you want. I really like this chair, although normally I don't care for upholstered DR chairs, but I think these are a beautiful hybrid of simple elegance and the heft that table needs. What you're looking for is more accurately referred to as a hutch.

If you can't find anything you like ready-made, check out an Amish furniture store -- many Amish furniture makers will customize pretty much whatever you want. Or scour antique/vintage shops.

I have this on my list of possibilities for my dining room. it’s not all drawers but at least some. Arhaus has some other pieces with upper storage and some lower draers.

Thank you for all these hints! I'm from California originally & I never heard the word 'hutch' for the piece of furniture I'm thinking of apart from one neighbor lady from Minnesota. I totally forgot that word. In my family it was sideboard or credenza, but I honestly don't remember if that referred to the units with top & bottom.

Now I've got better search terms & a photo to go on that's a big help as I've lived abroad for most of my adult life and some things are hard to remember (hutch) or for people in this country to visualize what I'm talking about.

All this help is great. Sorry if I'm responding to all in the wrong place... Getting used to this site on my phone.
