Is this some sort of Insect Egg Sac or a Fungus?
Comments (6)Thanks to everyone for your help! Those of you that are saying it is an oak fungus, it is pretty hard. Is that normal for a fungus to be hard and crusty? I tried cutting one in half and it just disintegrated on me...Nothing of substance was inside when it did. It was just like breaking up a dirt dobber nest. Here is another picture of the same one. Oddly enough it had turned pink by the time I got home from work. Either way, I'll just get rid of them. Just wanted to try and find out what it was before I did. http://tinypic.com/r/k1vp77/5...See MoreJust planted red maple in shock
Comments (10)We have heavy clay with very poor drainage, so we only water a little but do it twice a day. The soil remains moist beneath the mulch. A few days after the initial planting, we did end up cutting the encircling roots and the foot-long root branch that grew out of the pot (it was totally exposed to the air during delivery, so we figure it was no good). The tree turned even more red after this operation (the pictures above showed the leaves before this operation). But the leaves have turned back a little greener (still worse than the picture) this week. Another reason that we decided to perform the operation on the already shocked tree was to dig up the sod that I tossed to the bottom of the tree hole during the initial planting. They were already decomposing in the heavy clay pit - smelled so bad. Must say the tree has gone through hell due to our inexperience. It will be nice if it survives!...See MoreI am shocked- sort of- but I thought it might be possible..

Comments (10)oh jesus ... this hosta needs no treatment ... severe transplant shock .. and leaves damaged from something .. once you break the integrity of the surface .. you.. hail.. stick.acorn falling from tree.. etc ... then something SECONDARY can occur ... but there is no real reason to treat the secondary problem ... IMHO... water deeply thru teh heat of summer.. no fert.. they are stressed. .. not hungry ... they are hosta.. they could be throw on the driveway for the rest of summer... and probably be fine.. though you do fail to mention where you are.. or i missed it ... but they would be as ugly.. or worse than this.. but i wouldnt waste money on treating what basically amount to mechanical injury ... and/or transplant shock frankly.. back in the day.. half of my 1600 hosta looked like this.. in what is basically august ... its not really prime viewing time .. in many parts of the county ... ken...See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
