Kitchen island counter and perimeter cabinet counters
Comments (9)Thanks for the feedback everyone. We moved this past year and yes, it’s a terrible kitchen layout. Unfortunately I know that my husband will not ever do a total kitchen remodel. We just don’t know how long we will live here to make it worth it. We made the mistake of doing WAY to much to our last house and ended up moving after only 1.5 years. We will be rotating the cooktop so that it is still in the island but instead face the fridge. There’s no way to put it elsewhere without getting all new cabinets, I tried. I see what you are saying with the grey, and maybe I should have said lighter counter as I’m not tied to grey, just something a little brighter. Is there any lighter granite that works well with Ooba Tooba? My main question is still do I only do the island counter or do I do the entire kitchen’s counters to be uniform?...See MoreWho to call? Comments (4)I am a fabricator. I suggest going to 3 or more local cabinet shops and getting bids. If you have an accurate sketch and a couple pics they can easily provide an estimate. Most cabinet shops can provide laminate tops and they typically have on going relationships with solid surface, stone, or quartz fabricators so they could get you that pricing as well. If you go this route make sure you look over the various bids in detail. You'd be amazed how many people never read the details on a bid but just look at the final price. Make sure the bid includes removal and disposal of existing and specified responsibility for plumbing disconnect and reconnect. In my experience this approach will cost less than a kitchen and bath store as K&B's usually have the highest mark-ups since they're not making any money on the actual manufacturing of the cabinets or tops....See MoreOff white kitchen remodel- ideas for quartz counter top and backsplash

Comments (7)I agree with LWO--cooktop on the back wall. Also agree about time spent on each kitchen task. (The rest of his post seems a little hyperbolic.) You can then center the sink on the island, and prep to the left, across from the cooktop. The work triangle is contained in an area the size of a normal kitchen ;), and since the sink, DW, and trash pull-out are centered on the island, you have the option to reduce the widths of the drawers on each end, if finding a counter slab that wide proves difficult. I moved the ovens out of the corner (see pic at bottom for possible corner storage options), and drew the cabinets on the back wall deeper than standard, since you have such a wide work aisle. That will also provide more counter space, and if you're using a custom cabinet builder, you can have deeper drawers, for extra storage space. I'd suggest making the bar sink at least 18" wide, so it doubles as a prep sink when you have helpers in the kitchen. I reduced the size of the sink in the butler's pantry, to 18", and added a full-height ROTS pantry unit in there. You could also have a pull-out pantry to the right of the ovens, depending on which corner storage option is chosen. I made the counter deeper in the pantry and omitted the jog to recess the fridge. Cabinet widths are approximate and need to be verified. GW discussions--deeper counters GW discussions--deeper drawers...See MoreRelated Professionals
