Marks on Petunias

These are Black Magic petunias. They used to be velvety and solid black, but they have started to get light pink marks on the petals, usually near the folds. Any idea what these might be, and how to prevent them?

Are they just old flowers fading?

I thought that might be the case at first, but they seem to be appearing on younger flowers as well. None of my other petunias seem to be doing it, only the black ones.

I have the wave petunias from wally world. they all did fine - except one. I had to change its location (it could have been the shadow of eucalyptus prevented growth). Now it is flowering as expected. I like wally world because they bring new items (similarly for no particular reason discontinue some of my favorite ones). The price is always right. I paid $3.88 for a sixpack of waves. People who take care of plants are not expected to posess skills or knowledge beyond watering the plants (severe memory lapses are tolerated....many plants end up in the garbage bin). So dont expect expert advise....they are not master gardners. They can stock, water, move flats, get you the price and in rare cases help you to load your goodies. Big box stores are not out there to pick your pockets. Knowledgable customer always benifits. There is no hard and fast rule about local, mom & pop or master gardener's product will always be better. Win some, lose some - such is life.

hmmm.... I wonder if there is a mistake in First Class. Petunia is a purple with white stripe chimera. The pictures from the seller and those on the AVSA site match, but that's all the info I have about it.

Hi it's certainly not listed as a CP in fact Not one mention of the habit in 3 languages lol I first noticed the resin about 2 weeks after germination.. Light amber in color no noticeable smell just incredibly sticky. Within a month it had caught it's first lizard. Noting that there was not one insect caught in the resin I took some ants and placed them on the leaves. They all jumped off immediately. It does seem to secrete more resin around the lizard but I can't detect any type of digestion. Don't you think that's interesting enough to rate a paragraph or two?? lol These trees are grown by the acre in S. America but seem to rare in the US. Schizolobium "Split lobes" refers to seed pods that divides in half at maturity. You can google "pavonia" on the bird catcher tree. Was used tby the native Hawaiiians to cath the tiny birds that made those beautiful robes. It is not listed as a CP either but is known that the tree utilizes the body for seed germination. Most of the writeups are on if the plant is native to "Hawaii" not it's growth habits. I'm not sure "Carnivourous " has a scientific definition?? I suspect that most epiphytic Bromeliads are carniverous but I think only 3 are classified as such. Those that store water have bunches of different creatures utilizing the water yet don't seem to be consuming the plant. If nothing else waste is being deposited in the water all the way up to birds. Since there is no "flush" must be using it?? lol gary

No weeping allowed, we all have plants we have problems with for one reason or another. :-) Here's PW's 'Pretty Much Picasso' which has been a great plant but is starting to fade a bit. I probably haven't fed it enough. Pic taken awhile ago. Still looks *OK* and I'm leaving it to see if it perks up. If not I'll rip it out but it's a petunia I will buy again. The tag on this said it's an Easy Wave Blue which IMO is misnamed. The tag shows a pic of the same color as mine which I'd call fuschia, not blue. This wave is not as 'abundant' as other waves I've had. This pic taken today and I've fed and watered these less than the Picasso and they've held up better so I'd buy them again. I also bot a large flat of the old style ordinary dark purple petunias because I almost always get them and they were really slow taking off but are starting to grow larger and are blooming well. Don't have a pic. Petunias really require heavy feeding and lots of water. Not easy care but so pretty and fragrant.

any type of minor damage will make flowers fade faster ...

windy outside.. someone petting it a bit aggressively ..

dont worry about it.. petunia produce flowers all summer long.. and there are always new and old ones on the plants ... if there get to be too many.. just snip them off .. the sooner the old flower is removed.. the sooner it puts out new ones ... i use scissors ...

btw ... an annuals only reason for life.. is to procreate ..... produce seed .. so you should constantly be snipping off old flowers.. aka seed pods.. so it keeps blooming trying make more seed ... its called deadheading ... eventually in mid to late summer.. you may remove large branches.. aka... cutting it back ..

and just to be clear.. this particular seed will not come true from seed ... so no use in letting them mature ...

Thanks for the information, Ken. I will keep watching the plant for signs of a pattern to the damage, but as I mentioned, it does seem to affect young flowers as well.

I have not noticed this type of fading on any of my other petunias. The old flowers wither, but do not develop strange markings. I know it is a characteristic of black varieties that they are more prone to color striping during periods of extreme temperature, I had wondered if this was likewise characteristic of the the hybrid, and whether or not steps could be taken to ensure as many healthy looking flowers as possible.

have you considered that its not all that unusual.. but the black tissue just makes it more apparent???

Are you spraying your gardens with anything? Insecticide, fungicide? I have had petunias do that when I got some of the rose spray on them.
