Taking apart a well loved quilt

Rho Dodendron

Yesterday neice-in-law was asking me about repairing a quilt I made for nephew when he was born in 1987.

I sorta remember the quilt as rectangles pieced into square blocks and perhaps tacked with embroidery floss at the corners of each block. My skills were so basic back then I'm sure I didn't even sew on borders.

Anyhow the 100% cotton front and backing are in good shape but the poly batting is all wadded up.

IF I stitched in the ditch between each block

any advice how to repair/remake this quilt? I suggested buying new fabric & batting and use the original quilt as the facing.

Knowing he has loved this quilt all these years was heartwarming.
