Kitchen Cabinet Dilemma!

Hi, I would really appreciate some ideas on a problem that just came up with my kitchen design! My cabinet builder designed a furniture piece for an 80" wall in my kitchen(diagram 2 ). Unfortunately he never took into account the light switches when you enter the door. With the current design, I thought that the switches could be mounted to the side of the cabinet. (Diagram 1). The only other choices are to shorten the whole cabinet to accommodate the switches or just put plain uppers and tile backsplash, leaving current dimension (with the switch on the backsplash). (Diagram 3) Please help with any suggestions!!

Put the switches in the other room On the other side of the wall. You turn them on as you walk in. We have that in our kitchen and that is how light switches are done in some other countries.

I would do diagram 1. We are in the middle of kitchen reno and also encountered this. It’s next to the cabinet on the wall.

More thoughts- I'd contact the cabinet maker and see what he charges to repaint/touch up the worst cabinets and/or see if he has the color code so you can match it. DIY isn't always cheaper. Quality paint cost money and so do nice brushes. You mention you "hand sanding" - sure, go ahead, but I'll bet your arm will fall off before you finish. I used a $30 sander and it was worth $500 by the time I was done (I sanded my first cabinet and my arms were burning, but maybe you're more in shape than I am). My cabinets took me 4 months to repaint. But I took my time, cleaned them with TSP, sanded, primed and painted, and then let them cure. If you're not going to do it right, then just leave it alone because you could end up creating a disaster.

Warm toned natural wood is making a comeback. It is not quite the honey color, so I am not sure how that would work for you, I have seen painted kitchens with oak trim: You might consider wood lowers with white uppers as it seems the lowers get the most knocked into and more chips. Redo the floors while you have the opportunity. Cabinets are always shimmer to level. Never use wood shims. Plastic only. Wood compressed over time.

I’d suggest working with a different kitchen design professional. You need unbiased “design only” advice uncoupled from someone trying to sell you things. We are a design and build firm, and that is one of those things that we really struggle with. We all have built in biases. Designing with what we have available and have experience with is sometimes easier than exploring other options that may prove a better value or functional choice for the client. This is one reason we shifted to a doing a design deposit. It allows a client to take the design work, and approach different build contractors, and make their own alterations and substitutions. Most do not, but they have that option.

The cabinet is exactly size of the wall. 80" or so.Plan is covering the light switches that are already roughed in. It's a total rehab after fire.

I don't know how you plan to use these switches, but you could always use something like a Legrand under-cabinet lighting system to move any switches you wanted under the uppers and add task lighting in the same bar too.

Why can't you put the switches in the side of the cabinet? Admittedly the back of the switch boxes would be inside the cabinet. I also don't understand the full picture - the cabinet goes 80" between two doorways, two other walls, or what?
