Water pressure Tank Sizing

Hello Guru's,

We got out water well drilled recently and were able to get only 3GPM yield at 320 FT. We tried up to 800 FT and gave up and yield is 3GPM. I need help with water pressure tank sizing. Our Contractor installed a Amtrol VW34 tank which has max working pressure of 90 and max relief pressure of 75. Most of our neighbors wells have 6 GPM yield and have water pressure tanks model Wellxtrol WX205 which has max working pressure of 150 and relief pressure of 125. Even though both models have same capacity of 34 gallons, I am concerned with our future water pressure due to low yield well. Is our pressure tank numbers ok or should we get a model similar to our neighbors. please suggest

I purchased a cabin with 32 gal tank, 1 gpm. A local plumbing contractor installed a 500 gal storage tank with a ozone generator. $4k., last year 2020.

Hello Jim, Thank you for your reply. Do you recommend me getting a storage tank setup so i do not have to worry about the peak water demand. Is the overall setup expensive and any maintenance required for periodic storage tank cleanup.

If it is a bladder tank with the tire valve on top, get a tool typically found in the bicycle area of the store that will remove the valve in the stem. shut off the pump and remove the valve if you get water shooting out the bladder is most likely ruptured. Replace the tank and pump the new one up to the pressure listed on the tank label. If it is not ruptured replace the valve in the valve stem and pump the tank up to the pressure on the label. I know from experience if the bladder is ruptured you will get water shooting out of valve stem when you remove the valve. If I remember correctly it does sound like a ruptured bladder with the way the gauge is fluctuating. I have been off a well for 6 years now,but had a well for 20 years.

We just washed dishes with running water from our sink for the first time since last winter. Joed, you were absolutely correct. I suspect we had a faulty tank from the factory because we have had a problem with a small leak since we installed the pump and pressure tank. I ordered a new pressure tank (which was only about $14) last spring to see if I could get the leak to stop, but didn't have time to install it before we left for the summer. Today, we removed the old pressure tank and replaced it, and as soon as we reconnected the lines and turned on the pump, it pressurized, then kicked off. We turned on the sink faucet and it flowed in a clean, beautiful stream of water with the tank maintaining utter silence for nearly a minute before it kicked on again. It is so nice to have running water again. Thank you so much for your excellent suggestions. We did not have a super accurate tire gauge (2 out of three were stuck and one did not go high enough) but we think we got it ballpark and will double check with a new gauge. The manufacturer's suggestion was 28 psi, so we aimed for that and everything seems to be working dandy. Thanks a ton, we really appreciate it!!! sagebrushsally and her sethsquatch

The amount of water in volume is as important if not more so than the pressure. Adding outlets with the same size pipes could result in low performance overall. You may need bigger/more supply lines. The heater size/preformence only determines how long hot water will be supplied.

Pressure tank water pump pressure switch cycles on and off...

Trying to find the "home location for the two nuts on the water pump pressure switch. Is there such a thing as the home location? I can get the pump to come on, but cant get it to shut off. The closest I get is that it trips off, but cycles back on rapidly. I can see the brass plate under the switch swinging and that's what is causing the pump to come back on. THe smaller #2 nut has a direct affect on this, but I've tightened it and loosened it fully, and don't seem to get it to just go off.

The cost was $4k, 500 gal water tank, ozone treatment, new pressure tank, pump from storage tank to pressure tank, timer for well pump, New well controller, pad for tank (behind a tree) and plumbing and conduit.

Maintenance: checking the ozone filter, rinsing if necessary, one time in 9 months, staring at the sediment at the bottom, maybe 1/2 cup in 9 months. A young nephew “helped me check the tank”, I told him the sediment in the tank contained gold and when there was enough we would pan it.

For my well, it is depth multiplied by casing diameter, or something similar. i was able to run the well dry. If you have 500’ of water in an 8” casing, with 3 gpm you may not need a storage tank. My well has 15 gallons casing diameter and depth/length, with a recharge of 1 gpm.

My well company gave me the test results, a local plumbing company installed my water storage.

Your question is local to you. Good Luck...I am in California, my tank my provide fire suppression.

Sure Jim, thank you so much for the detailed information. My only concern is with the water pressure tank. Should I go with higher operating pressure tank with bigger storage capacity. I researched online and could not get any helpful information. Will see if anyone else here can help.
