Comments (23)Item #4, with the fancy brass pull, looks more like something called a "half commode" to me. The glass knob is almost certainly a later replacement, since it's a rather disastrous combination with the large brass pull on the drawer. A chamber pot would have been kept in the lower section with the door for use in the bedroom at night. Remember, many homes did not have indoor plumbing until the 1920s, and in cities it was not uncommon for several apartments to share a single toilet! (Chair-type commodes are much less common, possibly because they were less efficient uses of space.) In many commodes this cabinet section would have been lined for cleanliness with tin, enameled metal, or even marble in very fancy ones, but often they were just painted or varnished. As a comparison for overall shape, here is another half commode: They do indeed make excellent nightstands, and you'll often find them labeled as such in antique shops and on eBay. Sometimes people will retrofit a shelf inside the cabinet section to make it a more useful space. A full or double commode, also sometimes called a washstand, generally looks like one of these two pieces: FWIW, these are what I know as a gentlemen's dresser:...See MoreDo you think these chairs will look good with this sofa?
Comments (14)If you are after comfort, I fear that the sofa you posted won't give it to you. That very flat tight tufted upholstery doesn't yield to bodies, and the squareness of the arms and back isn't shaped like people...so although it is a nice clean European modern look, you may prefer something else. Here's something from Crate & Barrel that could give you a modern look and more comfort. For chairs, consider a modern version of the klismos chair. Here is a site that shows what I mean...I have no knowledge of this company or the quality of this chair, but it is an example of the style. http://www.clubchairs.com/upholstered-club-chairs/contemporary/cloverchairloungewith2pillows.cfm Here is a link that might be useful: C&B Delaney Sectional...See MoreHelp! I don't think I like my new recessed lights! What to do?
Comments (18)I'm glad to hear that the LED lights are working for you. It sounds like you have a much bigger space than we do, with only 2 more lights. I think this was perhaps our biggest mistake -- just too many of these lights. (As I mentioned, I was worried that LEDs wouldn't put out enough light). Maybe if we had only installed 4 of them, the amount of light would be ok. To reduce the number to 4 at this point would require completely re-placing the lights and rewiring. I wonder also if the increased number of lights in our smaller space is amplifying the effect of the flickering? i.e. maybe it wouldn't be noticeable if the lights were further apart? The housing and dimmer switch we have are both on the compatible list on the Cree website. All 7 of the lights are connected to the same dimmer switch. So I'm not sure what the problem is. When they are on at full power, they don't buzz or flicker. We had friends over yesterday and at full power they thought the lights looked great. (It wasn't too bright for them). Then I dimmed them and they didn't think the buzzing was too bad. They also didn't really notice much flickering. But then I started waving my arms around and they were shocked. The strobe effect when the lights were dimmed made my kitchen seem like a disco! Cbjmidwood, when you dim your lights and wave your arms around, is there any strobing?...See MoreDo you think this would look good in my front hall?
Comments (12)It's too small. Only 4" between each hook. Agree, look on etsy. Umbra makes these "Birdie Hooks", 3 for $17. You can buy as many as you need and place them anywhere on the wall. Magnet under the beak holds keys. While not a bird theme hook, Umbra also makes a really great flip hook where you can pull down the hook you want to use and push it back up when you don't want to use it, and you can space the hook use as you need it. I'm planning on a getting one for coats for a kitchen nook. In your place, I'd get either the longest (36") or two or three of the smaller ones and place them at different heights and spaces. Birds: These come in different lengths and colors...See MoreMilan Patel
