Color help with shutters, garage, and door

It’s time to paint our house and I’m having trouble settling on colors, especially for the shutters, garage, and front door. Below are two mock ups, using SW’s simulator. I kind of like the base color - a greenish taupe that goes well with the stone, but I can’t decide if the garage should be the same color as the house or more like the trim. I’ve read arguments both ways, but not sure I’m liking either option. Also, the black shutters - classic? Or boring? (Bear in mind we have a conservative HOA). And then there’s the front door. In theory, I’d love a blue door that pops, but I’m not sure it looks good in this instance. The green is an alternative I was thinking of. Thoughts?

Take the shutters off. They are wrong for the windows.

In general, the garage door should be the same color as the siding. Can you take the frames out of the garage lights so that it is just a plain square?

I like the siding color and a black emerald door. Possibly, you could go a shade lighter on the siding color.

I agree with houssaon's suggestions. The only windows sized right for shutters are the two above the garage. A wide trim around all the windows would be a better fit. Painting the garage the same color as the siding will allow for more focus at your front door/entry area. The blue door looks off to me. Black seems a better fit, especially with the roof color.

Yes, if you can, switch out the garage panes for square ones for a more updated look.

ETA - If the shutters have to stay, black looks cohesive to me with the roof and door.

Hi Cindy, the brick is "Old Orleans" by Cherokee brick. Its a great looking brick with lots of character. The mortar was rubbed over the brick to achieve the aged look. I put the same post in the home decorating forum with a couple more up close pictures if you care to see any more of this brick.

This is a recommended color from SW for Mindful Gray…homburg gray. I would do this on the shutters and the garage doors and leave the wood door as is. The two middle windows shouldn’t have shutters as the won’t fit appropriately, but you are not painting the siding and the darker outlines of the shutters will show if you don’t replace what was there. Personally, would like the house with out shutters and would probably paint the siding and garage doors and have no shutters at all.

If you make the other changes as suggested, I don't think you'll feel the need to paint the brick. There's no sense creating a maintenance issue where there is none now. The house has the potential to be very handsome. Some pretty pots with flowers on either side of your door will add some color as well. Don't forget that nothing looks pretty this time of year when trees are bare and lawns are brown.

I agree with Judy regarding the shutters. If you keep them for now, keep the color as is...not light blue. Since it's right up front, the garage door should be the same color as the siding. That will help it from pulling so much focus. At some point you might consider a garage door with windows across the top.

and really don't care for the garage door in the same color.

Darker is better, and think about getting new window pop-ins. upgrade them. also consider some Carriage hardware

If you can't remove the shutters, get some wider ones that are more balanced with the size of your windows. I'd go lighter on the siding color, using a light color taken from your brick.

Great idea using the SW color planner! The stacked stone is the immovable element that defines the pallet. Also take in the roof color (black?), the soffit/fascia/windows (white?).

Your stone looks reds/oranges/creams - is there a gray or taupe in there? Garage - this can be masked into the home exterior by painting it the same color as the body of the house OR highlighted by having it match the shutters and/or front door. That's just personal taste. Remove those window inserts on garage if possible. The front door can be your 'pop' as long as it complements the brick/house color. (if your stone is orange, door= blue. if stone is reds, door= green.

May we see your actual house without the mock up additions you've made, plus a close-up of the brick work for color reference? Are the colors you're suggesting part of the HOA's options? You might want to track down exactly what they want color-wise. Yes, they probably think the vestigial shutters are high style and unify the look of the community, so I doubt you can simply remove them. Start with the HOA and then bring your limited selections here for a final decision. Agree with removing the arched window inserts in the garage doors. I don't see the need for carriage hardware. Instead, spend the money to upgrade and beef up all the exterior lighting. Lights should all be 1/3 of the front door's height.
