A bit confused by the pictures and what the reality is. But regardless. I wouldn’t move the shades. Keep them mounted in the windows. And tile as much surface area... countertop to ceiling and right to left where cabinets are

What is on the far left of your photo? If it is the door in the discussion and we’re talking about a 3” or so gap, I would suggest you tile this sliver too to finish the wall. I have nearly the same situation and went to the ceiling around a window and my designer suggested I do the same thing on the edge of cabinets, up to the ceiling to finish the wall. I ignored her because of all the research I did on what was “standard”. I made a mistake and I’m telling you this so that you can think about it and consider the options. It looks rally dumb, almost like I forgot to do it or ran out of tile. If it consistently hugs the cabinets on all sides, you don’t want to leave one side without tile.

@lmmcnitt I'd love to see a photo! Here is an actual photo of the area (before reno). Are you suggesting to tile floor to ceiling right against the trim?

Oh geez, if you have 12” like it shows in your photo, then NO, you can stop at the edge of the cabinets, easy. If the new cabinets are moved over and closer to the door molding with only about 3” then this is where I would say to continue the tile up to the door molding to finish it.

To confirm Hula, with the reno you will have base cabinets and no uppers that end into another wall? I thought the doorway was on the same as the cabinets will be attached. In this case, the tile would stop in the corner. This picture has upper cabinets but hope this helps clarify.

Yes - you need to go to the ceiling and around both windows completely. Whether you end it where the cabinets end by the door depends on what's going on beyond it. If the wall ends just on the other side of the door, its best to just tile around it as well for continuity.

@lmmcnitt it will be 4.5" from the end of the base cabinet to the trim of the doorway (I guess a little less with the counter?)

@Lisa Caudill Designs That's right. Base cabinets that go further than the uppers. Here is a pic of what it looks like further down that wall so you can see that it is not set back like in your example. Again, pre-reno but the doorway is not moving.

Ok so I’m letting this be an example of what NOT to do. Your set up might be completely different and your choice may be obvious. In my case I had thought the thin strip between the cabinet and the door trim-about 3” would look like a dumb stripe. Not until the tile work was completely done did I realize that the entire cabinet wall (s) should have been treated the same way with tile enveloping the cabinets and making it more continuous and all going to the ceiling. Wish I had a do over but I’m not looking back. Maybe I can spare someone of the mistake.

@lmmcnitt - First of all, that's beautiful! Second of all, I think I probably would have done what you did too....or maybe just gone to the door in the area below the cabinet line *shrug*

You might have ended up questioning the top unless you were also going over that door.

I actually was going to go about halfway up the cabinet which would match the tile height on another wall below the hood but I had a lazy tile person who wanted a shortcut. He did do a great job on the tile work so that was more important. Good luck with your project!

Then yes, you’ll need to end the tile somewhere. That extension on the countertop makes it tricky, but I would end it before the doorframe either to the end of the countertop or set back an inch or two. You should tile all the way up from there. An option to help that transition to the left of that upper would be to put a couple of open corner shelves. It will help balance your space better. Something like this...

@Therese N Those are great pics. I totally understand the reason for the shelf there, but we are putting an extra tall coffee maker there so putting a shelf at the same height as the bottom of the upper cabinet might be tough.

You said "tile all the way up from there" - did you mean to the ceiling? Sounds like it but your examples don't.

So whatever happened to the beam in the middle of your hood?

We are getting costs to have it completely hidden in the ceiling. Otherwise it will remain.

@hula1974 yes, I think tile to the ceiling, because even if you do some kind of shelves, it will be more exposed and different enough in your case. Either way, I think some version of shelving or other visual weight next to the upper will help quite a bit. You could keep a couple cookbooks on a shelf, or browse Houzz & Pinterest for other ideas. If I see something cool, I’ll toss it back here too.
