Comments (12)Because it's so symmetrical I think garden layouts will be easier. It looks like, as Yardvark said, you could rip out the overgrown bushes flanking the doorway, replace with something smaller, and trim/shape the rest to see how it looks as a start. There are some healthy ilex or something in the middle which could be attractive. Do you know what is on the left? Oakleaf hydrangea? Your local garden center could suggest plants and shrubs that will do well in your climate. Is there room to add a larger tree as a focal point in the yard off the right corner? Either a full-sized shade tree or a 25-30 foot flowering tree? I know some people hate the idea of painted brick, but this seems like a good candidate for the white brick-black trim look. It's stylish now, but I think it will also stand the test of time. There are some new products for painting brick that don't peel. Comments (21)@Elaine Doremus Resumes Written Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately we were not able to find any images of the home from the past. I was hoping some folks on Houzz might be able to tell what style it originally was or at least give some good direction on how to we can restore it. For example I think the roof line may have originally gone straight back, instead of the second pitched section of the roof you can see on the left side. I apologize - I know I am not using the correct terminology! The home also has cheap vinyl replacement windows, so I would like to one day replace them. Maybe the anderson craftsman or farmhouse line? I wonder if we would change the scale of the windows at all......See MoreNeed decorating curb appeal for small front porch
Comments (4)The shrubs to the right are drift roses, so they will be blooming soon and through the fall. The bushes mirror those on the other side, with the exception of the Kaleidoscope Abelia since that bed to the right is smaller and can't accommodate them. There are 3 recessed cans for porch lighting and landscape lights that light up the columns. We don't lack for light, but not a pendant or any wall fixtures there --just the cans....See MoreCurb appeal and new porch
Comments (12)I wouldn't make the porch full width, for reasons stated above, nor would I make the house darker than it already is. I would suggest a porch somewhat wider, maybe to the windows on each side, dressed up wth a gable and posts at each corner. Then I would put the rest of my money into landscaping, where you will get the most bang for the buck. Consider hiring a landscape designer on a one-time consultant basis for ideas and maybe a planting plan....See MoreCelery. Visualization, Rendering images
