I agree that my kitchen layout works well and I agree that I should work with the elements of my home. Part of the reason I chose the Aurea stone quartz was because it had a white background with subtle grey and tan veining that complimented the floors and cedar walls. The Formica counters needed to be replaced because they were stained and damaged in several areas. I feel like my kitchen would have a similar look if I re-stained the cabinets a more neutral brown to compliment the cedar and used a white counter and backsplash(because that is basically what the Formica looks like). I do plan on installing European hinges and replacing the hardware and getting an undermount stainless sink with a new faucet. We will also be moving the microwave above the oven and replacing the dishwasher. My contractor assured me that his painter was experienced enough that IF I decide to paint them, he would be able to conceal the grain. I do believe raw wood cabinets are pretty, I just want to make sure that if I leave the arches on the doors and leave them wood, they won’t look out of place. C B, With the additional photos you posted I can see more clearly why you want to make the change as there is no counter top space around the stove or refrigerator so if you are a family that likes to cook, it would be a pain with this current design. Moving the sink over looking the window? It's a toss up in my book, because that table where family gatherings are give a pleasant view of the deck. I'm in the land of heat and humidity, but because you have a basement that gives you venting options to install registers in the floor. Although if this heating system is boiler generated heat, that will likely raise the cost and complications. With that said it may be worth it to think about this further, because kitchens can make or break a house... not only when living there, but also when it comes time to sell. It's a nice big kitchen that was poorly designed originally... in my opinion you need more counter space to make the kitchen more cook friendly. One option would be to take out that wall oven and the cook top and then put in a dual oven with stove top over where the range hood is currently. Make counter space where the wall oven is currently. Reinstall the table so the longer part of it is against the wall, more eaters will get the view of the deck while they eat, this will give you a bit more room in the center for an island with more much needed counter space. Install a sink in that new island with electric outlets. Put the sink in so when the cook is using it they can look out the window. The advantages to this suggestion are off the hook. It would cut your costs a lot. Leave heating as it is. No need to resize windows and then have more costs to fix siding issues. You get the window view times 2. Family sits down to eat and a sink island that looks out that same window. Counter space is increased by taking out wall oven, putting in dual range where current stove top is. Prep work is easier you have counter space next to refrigerator (the wall oven is replaced with additional counter space) and a few feet in the center the new island counter with sink. I love home repair shows. LOL.

@Mare M Yes, it may be an adjustment - but on average we spend more time prepping than cooking (70% to 20%), so you'll be able to look out into the room while you're chopping stuff up instead! For me, I don't spend much time babysitting stuff on the stove unless it's risotto, and when I'm at my stove, I'm usually focused on what I'm doing. I prep on my island. Technically the best place to prep would be between the sink and the range, but in my house the sink is surrounded by dishes so I prep on my island. If I had a prep sink there it would be perfect. I am also considering a double-oven range for my next one. I can't go bigger without ripping out cabinets (my kitchen is pretty new), and I do a lot of range to oven cooking and roast a lot of veggies, so 2 ovens would be great for me. My microwave is at the end of my island by the fridge.

I think you are over thinking this. Most appliances - especially ones that are middle of the road are replaced in older homes without issues because the dimensions are standard. Dishwashers are 24". The dilemma with refrigerators is generally with older homes where the refrigerator space is too short or too narrow to accomodate more modern refrigerators. You would have to determine whether you want a 36" or 42" inch wide or something slightly different. When I was looking the standard height of a refrigerator was 69" - I did get a KA model that was 72" but that was an anomoly. You would have to think about general styles and clearances so that there would be adequate space to open doors but a competent designer would be able to advise on that. Are you going with a stove or a wall oven? Gas or induction? What width. Wall ovens are generally 30" wide and so if you are getting wall ovens you would configure the kitchen with a 30" tall cabinet intended to house wall ovens. Do you want space for a microwave drawer. Also given supply chain issues I am not sure there are going to be great bargains available in the future especially if you care at all about quality and functionality.
