Comments (7)If that's the case, then yes you CAN tile right over it, although it's recommended that you start fresh. The reason being then you don't have to worry about the laminate parting, or "delaminating" from the base underneath. However, if you want to go over what you have, scuff it up good with a sander, and then use some thing like Laticrete's 317 thinset mixed with their 333 liquid latex, or Mapei's Kerabond thinset mixed with their Keralastic additive. You want something strong that's not going to lose its bond, and those are about the two strongest thinsets I know of....See MoreIntegrated fridge depth next to counter top
Comments (7)I too have the same concern, we did Thermador integrated panel ready, the contractor has part of the box constructed and the framing for the fridge is flush with the lower cabinet, the fridge is at the end of a 36 inch cabinet/counter run, and I'm worried that the countertop is going to stick out past the panel fridge doors? We really wanted that seamless look, but I'm worried our cabinet guy didn't factor in clearance for the counter overhang? will it look weird for the countertop do be proud of the panel fridge door, or will the panel/door hinge help factor in that 3/4 inch of countertop, I'm fine if it's flush, but I'm worried it won't be? The fridge is the end piece on that wall, so it might not look weird...but??? Any advice? Worst case scenario we make them redo the framing for the fridge to be flush with counter?...See MoreShould I redo the cabinets and counter top?
Comments (23)Granite in a kitchen in a house valued at $100,000? NOPE, that's a waste of money. You won't begin to recoup what you spend for it. And everyone is changing out their tile countertops, at least from what I see on this site. (It's that grout, who wants to clean the cooking dreck out of the grout?) I would consider NOT buying a house with tiled countertops in the kitchen, all other things being equal. Some people really prefer stained cabinets over painted. I can like the look of either, but unless you get a true pro to do the job ($$$), it's going to look cheapened. Those cabinets look fine to me, and would not dissuade me from making an offer. It's the curb appeal (driveway) you may want to be focusing on. Oh, and see if you can bleach the floor tile grout in the shower as white as possible - or see if there is a way to make it all look like it's supposed to be one light sand or gray color of grout......See MoreColor suggestions for kitchen cupboards, counter tops and tile floor?
Comments (6)I think you will get good feedback if you post some pictures of the style and colours you like. Spend some time browsing kitchens here on Houzz and pick some that make you happy. Now, for your kitchen, I find the centre placement of the handles very dated. I hope when you are painting that you will remove those pulls and have the holes filled. I assume you are happy with your current layout since you are keeping it. Have you considered refacing your cabinets with new doors? I'm worried the arched tops are going to continue to make the room look dated even once you spend money to update other items. There are several companies that do refacing. You might look at Semi Handmade for profile ideas. If you chose this option, the bodies of the cabinets would be painted onsite but the new doors could be factory painted. You'll want to remove the wallpaper and also the heavy valance over the window and the wood valance too above the window. The room looks a bit dark in the pictures....so removing the heavy curtain will help bring some light in. You may also need/want to consider some new lighting. If you are going to get new counters then also get new backsplash. I know some folks have had success painting tile but I think it may be temporary success. I think you should start with counters. Go shopping and see the slabs in person (not always possible these days). When you find something that you like, then bring it home and start choosing your cupboard paint colour based on the counter. The last thing to be chosen will be backsplash. Wall paint colour will need to work with the cupboard colour and the counters, so it all has to tie together, starting with the least changeable element - the new counters. Please take the time to gather some inspiration pictures. It will help you narrow down your choices (solid colour counters, lots of pattern, small veining, large dramatic veining - all of these are out there waiting for you)....See MoreGary Plankell
