After they've flowered, just cut off the spent flowers and they may bloom again. If you don't cut them off, they won't flower again this season. That's really all you have to do.

Another list - requires starting indoors under lights, mostly. A list from zone 5 I've been looking a while and almost everything says it has to be sown indoors to get blooms the first year. I plan to winter sow a lot this year, but there are a few that I already have indoors and ready for the cold frame in February. I won't put heat on them for a few more weeks, but it will give them a head start so I have a few plants blooming aside from annuals. I also started two flats this fall, one Shasta daisy and another black eyed susan. I purchased a couple purple coneflowers this past year and got a couple from the several packs of seed I tried direct sowing. I got lazy and didn't keep the seed moist through germination. I think that's why I had such little success.

Thanks to all for your very kind comments. I have approximately 1700 2007 seedlings that are flowering for the first time this year. I find that if I get them in the ground by the middle of May most of them will flower the following year. If I get lazy and plant after June 1, I do not get many flowers the following year. (Zone 5) Mona: Number 4 is my absolute favorite this year and the picture just does not do it justice. I took several pictures but that colour seems to escape my camera. Number 4 is a cross between "Hurricane Swirls x Jane Mahan". I also thought the last one was from a cross of Meet Joe Black but it is actually from "Courting Trouble x Ledgewood Pansy Eye". okbt: I also have had problems with some of the curly edges sticking together. The nights have been unusually cool and we have rain almost every day. I think the cool evenings causes the problem. My plants did not start flowering until July 15th., which is about two weeks late. We have had a record cool and wet season so far this year. I also noticed that many of the first blooms on my older plants were deformed and did not open completely. They are looking much better now but the first blooms were very disappointing. Aristolochia fimbriata was a first year flowerer (and the only one I have grown). Easy from seed - grew in cold greenhouse over winter.
