I wonder what the % of correct labels from Lowes is?
Comments (38)I got home last night and here is what has bloomed from my Lowes specials. 2 of the 3 aphrodite have bloomed and both are aphrodite( just beautiful). Of the 3 minerva 2 have bloomed one is a orange soverign, and the other was apple blossom. Of the 3 Apple Blossoms, 1 has bloomed it was Apple Blossom. Of the 3 Vera, one has bloomed and it was Vera, of the 3 Lady Jane, one has bloomed and it was Lady Jane, of the 6 susan, 1 has bloomed and it was Lady Jane, of the 6 Prince Carnivals, 1 has bloomed , I have no idea what it is. The stem is very tall over 20 inches it towers over the other plants. It is dark red, with a small white throat, and the outside is dark red w/white streaks. My husband took a picture of it, while I was at the coast. Looks like a few will bloom this week, I will post the results as I get them. Nothing is blooming at the coast, I have them in the ground with mulch, it was 30 degrees for almost 5 days. The leaves took a hit, but it looks like they are coming back since the weather is back int he high 60's. Yesterday afternoon we spent the day at the beach, and it was just full of cars, from Minn, Ill, Iowa, Mich, and Canada. Barbra...See MoreBlue Angel: Pinch tip or not
Comments (17)Okay folks. It's me again. The new shoots now have a set of leaves each and growing tips that are 'pinchable'. I know that if I pinch these there is little doubt they will again sprout new side shoots. My concerns are: When do you stop this process in order to not jeopardize having blossoms/flowers? I could pinch till the cows come home in reality, right. Secondly: It is my understanding that at the end of the growing season I am supposed to cut this all back to ground level. (type 3) If I do this I will in effect be cutting off everything I have just worked at building! I would start this entire process over from bottom up every spring? Am I grasping this correctly or not. Sorry for what might be such dumb questions to some but I just want to be doing this the right way ... and I respect your time and expertise. Thanks so much....See MoreQuarantined Blue Angel puts up scape
Comments (6)Now I can smile about the beautiful Blue Angel and not feel sad about terminating it while it is trying so hard to live. Yes!!! The Agdia ImmunoStrip tested NEGATIVE FOR HVX. There was a control line, but there was no test line. As advised to save two strips and not test each plant separately, I combined the leaf samples from Winter Snow and Blue Angel, the two Lowes plants with a high potential for bringing HVX into my little bit of Eden. I figured the three plants located in the area (Fragrant Queen from PDN was the third innocent party) would have to be removed if any of the Lowes plants tested positive, so any results showing positive would get the whole bunch yanked. Actually RoundUp applied and neutralized as much as possible before removal in the fall, along with the soil. Now life is so much simpler. I do not have to do all these unpleasant unhappy things to my garden. I can go touch the plants, look at their new growth and the backs of the leaves, enjoy the scapes, and check for damage from insects or disease. Well, we have a second chance with my in-the-ground trio, and I may opt to put more in the ground now as well. These three are growing very well. They emerged much later than the ones which overwintered in pots, and so I hope will keep growing longer in the fall as well. Maybe they won't exhibit signs of heat dormancy. They did not last fall, still looking good when we came back south the day before Thanksgiving. And I still have 4 test kits for HVX to use before May 2013, and I will test before I worry so much next time. Whew! That was a squeaker....See MoreTop 5 dark blue or purple iris ??
Comments (24)I received fabulous irises from Paradise Garden this summer, and they have a great website too. I ordered 13 bulbs and they sent an additional 9 free (of similar color and style). All were huge and are doing very well- better than any of my "nursery" irises, the rebloomers are even starting to come after less than 2 months in my garden and in less than ideal weather. my "main" garden is blue with white plicatas and a few old fashioned purples. I am most looking forward to Autumn Tryst (3 freebies) and Happy New Year(white with violets) and City Lights (also 3 freebies- dark blue with white hi-lite). I try to stick with reblooms cause i like a little bonus :) Autumn Circus (purple with white) has been exceptionally vigorous in my garden....See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
