My exterior paint-a-thon has come to a halt
Comments (26)Thanks loribee. I found it last year at JoAnn Fabrics and bought some but never got around to making cushions (probably because I don't have a sewing machine and lack sewing skills.) The fabric is just wrapped around the cushions so for now it is good enough. Maybe I should start a sew-a-thon this winter. Hi mrsmarv. How funny that we have the same sample from Glidden! I opened my recently and it is a little more yellow than I remembered but still a fun color. I might have to paint a shelf in the garage just to use it somewhere. Lots of votes for the white on the table. Since I was planning on priming it that won't be a problem to see how it will look. I think I will try to get it stripped today. It is a nice cool day here (48 degrees right now) so I could do it outside. I love the color of my front door and bench but I don't have a color name. I looked at all the paint colors in the BM deck and couldn't find a dark enough navy so I took a sample pot of BM Hale Navy H-154 and mixed in black until I got the color I liked. (The Hale Navy looks very dark in the sample pot but once you see it in full sunlight it looks much, much lighter. I added more black that I would have thought.) Then I had it mixed. It was kinda fun to make my own custom color. I highly recommend it. The door color before was a dark purple which looked great with the old exterior but not so good with my interior colors. And when I am home I like to keep that door open so the dogs can lay in front of the screen door and look out. The new color is perfect - inside and out. From a distance it almost looks black but once you get closer it is more dark navy. Finally, thanks for the compliment. I am a big fan of yours. I constantly think of you ottoman. Comments (47)phenie53, I like your idea of doing hollow rafters, you could use low intensity LED rope lighting. It stays cool and runs on very little energy. It's what I have in my kitchen for over the cabinet lighting. All I did was buy the rope lighting at the hardware store and plug it in. You could probably figure out a way to simply have your electrician add an electrical outlet somewhere near the rafters then lay the roping in the openings. You can connect lengths of rope lights (they're like xmas lights) easily. There are many other versions of ceiling rafters to consider, the picture I posted is the simplest. Some have ceiling pieces too, like a triangle of wood with that horizonal rafter being the bottom part. I've seen this sort of ceiling treatment on the HGTV type shows, they really are just sistered boards, ends cut at an angle that fits snug against the ceiling, and then attached to the ceiling. There is special hardware you can use, some pretty hammered iron type pieces, which would give it more character. I see a way that this room could evolve into a lodge or ranch mood, if you wanted to take it that way. The rafters give it that barn-like rustic feeling. You can also experiment with rafter finishes, various levels of distressing, etc. I think dark and something with (fake) wormholes, scraped finish would o a nice counterpoint to the polished look of the new rug....See MoreAdvice on exterior paint colors
Comments (10)There are definitely ways you can update your home exterior without painting the brick. If you choose to do a two-tone, we recommend painting the siding a non-neutral color since you want to stay away from tan and go with white trim. If you choose to paint the siding and trim the same color, it will give your home an ultra-modern look that might have the curb appeal you've been wanting. You do have a lot of beautiful greenery that surrounds your home. If you'd like to take advantage of that and have your exterior blend in with its natural environment, we recommend painting your siding in PPG's Cavern Moss. If you want something that's sleek and modern, go with a warm gray like PPG's Shining Armor. Best of luck with your home exterior repaint project. You can order free swatches of both of these PPG colors on our website today at https://samples.paintzen.com/landing/all. Comments (98)After some thought and soul searching this evening, I decided to paint a color that I love while also showing respect for the Victorian style (and will fit in with the neighborhood). I love how you worded it @liasch "goodbye gift" to the home. I need to rethink my strategy but I will say that I've learned a lot about color, architecture, and most importantly exploring the creativity that you all shared with me. Where should I go from here? Should I create a new post? Should I include all the house colors around me? When looking for a professional designer for services, what are some questions I should ask so I know I won't get scammed or be disappointed? Thank you everyone who contributed to this discussion. I've learned a lot here!...See MoreHU-187528210
