First, the "equivalence" of VaH CFM ratings depends on what is being compared. VaH do not include pressure losses from ducting and make-up air. XO likely uses the standard condition of a blower hanging in free air (zero static pressure loss), for which the above losses plus the XO hood baffle pressure losses must be included. For the two hoods with blowers hanging in free air, the flow rates may be expected to be similar. Once other pressure losses are included, depending on their severity, the VaH will start to lose the battle because their blower design appears to be more sensitive to pressure loss (per their website data).

Search out VaH hood related threads here and see if the descriptions of cleaning them are consistent with your understanding.

Without starting from requirements (I have addressed this many times here) the appropriateness of either hood for the application cannot be ascertained.

VAH is actually quite loud, only their marketing and sales people think otherwise.

What range will this be over? How much do you cook and what styles? What kind of environment do you live in (e.g., how often do you have a lot of windows open)?

I am installing a GE mongram 36" cooktop range, 6 burner. When cooking I will use 4-5 burners. I live in a home approx 3800 sq feet in new england area. My builder likes the XO and Salesperson showed me the VAH too. I want quality and something that will last....I am redoing my whole 1st floor and kitchen, will have a wood hood with vented insert. Looking for advise

A few quick thoughts.

- VAH are loud and not very effective though they do have a good marketing dept.

- XO liners appear to all have integrated blowers which will be much louder than an inline duct or external blower. The number one reason that people give for not using their exhaust hood when they should (which is EVERY time anything is being cooked) is that they are too loud.

- Since you're not in a temperate climate and cook a fair bit you'll want an exhaust hood that will perform well.

- Read the FAQ I posted.

As I state in the FAQ: Your builder, HVAC contractor, local building inspector and appliance sales folks very likely do not know or understand these issues. It is up to homeowners to take responsibility for their and their family’s health.
