Mud in your eye

This jesting toast “Here’s mud in your eye!” seemed to be so common – especially in the United Kingdom – that it was anticipated little problem in finding its source. Surprise! It had apparently baffled most of the students or word origins. Eric Partridge came to the rescue with the information that “Here’s mud in your eye” had its origin in the trenches of World War I. Better mud in your eye than something more lethal!
