Update on the wall behind my sofa
Comments (11)I agree that the lamp on the table needs to be moved to the left, so it is next to the person who would be seating on the couch. On the left side, pull the small end table forward and put the floor lamp behind it, closer to the couch as well. One you redistribute the lamps (and the shades) I think you will find those two covers much less noticeable, and it will pull the focus to the center area of the couch and mirror. I do agree with squirrel that you need some lighter colored pillows and a throw tucked on the brown couch, to bring some of the lighter feel of the wall color down, and also to help make the seating the visual focal point by keeping your eyes down low. With the seating arranged as it is (and needs to be, from your description), I think anything you put on the walls over the covers on the two sides will look out of place....See MoreHelp! Comments (23)Thanks everyone, definitely some good ideas here. I'm reluctant to put anything large into that space, like a screen or a tall shelf, because I think it will block the openness of the room (which I mostly like) plus the ceilings are so tall it would be hard to find anything proportional for that narrow but tall space. For now I'm going to play with the lamp and art/mirror placement, hoping to find something that will visually balance a bit better. I'm hoping Carrie B and auntthelma are right, that the right focal point on the wall will make the gap less noticeable, instead of trying to fill the gap with something. (Though I have thought about putting a table behind there, like Nira Juso and Nicole Shields Design suggested, I just need to find something narrow enough that it doesn't block the entryway to the bathroom.) I also like the idea from housegal200 to put a mirror over the couch to visually open up the wall instead of filling in the gap, as I do sort of think the fireplace is the natural focal point, and I don't want every surface to compete with one another. Negative space is important, I'm just not sure that gap is my ideal negative space :) I'll try to come back and post a follow up once I've got my next arrangement. Thanks again everyone, and if you have more ideas please do keep posting....See MoreDecor for large wall with couch off centered?
Comments (37)I think there are more important issues than what to put on a wall. The couch is huge and takes over the room, and none of the other furniture is working with it. Too much beige. The tired pillows need colorful pillow covers. Toss the “accessories” on the side table and fireplace and the one lonely too-small lamp on the side table. The side table should go and either get a side table to match the coffee table or replace them both. Two floor lamps for reading are needed on either end of the sofa as well as sconces over the fireplace and additional lighting. The TV is set too high to watch. The baby furniture is not a good look but I understand if it is necessary. I would however put the baby seat away unless it is being used. The set of smaller photos on the wall opposite the fireplace does not work as they are too small and do not make an impact lined up along the wall. This room needs some color. If you can do it, what I would do is to either take apart the too-large couch and reconfigure it so that there are two seating areas facing each other on either side of the fireplace, and the TV moved to the wall where you would like to put something, along with bookcases and TV storage that would surround the TV. That is, a large nice-looking storage unit. Then you could have an interesting display above the fireplace, say, a mirror and some photos. Something personal....See MoreSomeone please help! Comments (30)Can your desk go to the left of the fridge where dining table is now? If it’s just you and your son maybe replace current DR table with a smaller and standard height (29”) and round dining room table? If you replaced your current table with a smaller round one, say 30-32” diameter, it could “float” in the space behind the desk (if desk is against wall, left of fridge). Though somewhat unconventional many kitchens do have a built in desk, (this would mimic that) and with small apartments creativity is essential to use space efficiently. If this worked you’d have more breathing room around sofa and could keep fish tank in LR. If replacing DR chairs as small scale as you can that’s still comfortable for adult you....See Morekatrina_ellen
