New old house, ideas please...
Comments (18)Wow, thanks civ Iv fan!!!The links help alot and make me realize that shutters aren't the only answer to prettying-up the front a bit. I'm also a firm believer in 'if they wouldn't cover the window when closed, they don't belong.' It would look ridiculous if we tried to shutter them! Those two windows are like eyes too close together-you wouldn't want to draw too much attention to them. Ha, ha! These windows are actually fairly new too so I wouldn't really like to have to replace them. Good to know I can work with them. I like the darker trim colour on the windows of the green house plus that neat detail at the gable. Very pretty yet simple. Both pics have nice porches too which I can see at the front of ours and wrapped along the side. Update: my husband,(since lunch) now thinks we should treat the side as the backyard, which it really is or will be since it faces the largest expanse of lawn. Wants to put attention to making the front nice-looking-good, me too! Still wants to put in a nice door on the long side but we're thinking French doors now-I think that side needs a bit beefing up with detail but I guess if we keep the front simple then the rest of the house look should follow, right? So, no shutters on the rest? I'm guessing, it would look stupid. It wouldn't be following the 'Pioneer Tent Stle' of architecture as the blue house in link 2 indicates. Is that what style mine is?...See MoreCan't decide between side by side or French Door!
Comments (37)danajw, I had the same problem deciding on a fridge last fall. I had a SxS that frustrated me everytime I had to find something in the freezer. Also didn't care for the narrow fridge space too. So, I kicked around the idea of an allfridge/allfreezer but was disappointed in what I found. Fridigaire & Electrolux Ikon had poor construction & maintenance issues. Whirlpool Sidekicks were too "boxy" with no option for a riser like the Fridigaire model. So, I went with the GE Profile FD in ss. Have never liked it! I don't like the layout of FD fridges. I have a family of 6 at home & I am frustrated again at the hide & seek game I have to play to find anything. There is not enough storage room in the fridge because I had to remove 2 shelves (comes with 6)in order to make 2 complete, accross the fridge shelves. Using 6 shelves is a nightmare for a family greater that 2. With multiple tall milk, juice & soda bottles, I had to lower the shelf to get around the light on the roof which is centered in the middle. The fruit & veggie drawers are great and the 1 large pullout tray across the bottom is my favorite because it holds so much & I can PULL IT OUT to find something. When I was looking at a different manuf's model the salesman compared the pullout drawers & told me the one I was looking at was too flimsy & that GE is one of the most solid on the market. I thought, "so what? how often will I use this drawer?" Price difference was minor so I went for the GE. As for the doors, I wish I had gotten 1 door just for the convenience of 1 door to pull & for storage. Too many little buckets... To me, the worst part is the freezer. In the store, they all look SO BIG. But when you get it home & fill it up you realize that NOTHING can be above the level of the bottom of the drawer above it. I am constantly shuffling things around to get them flat so that I can close the door. Not fun when kids help themselves and don't put things back in the exact place. I moved my SxS to the basement when we got this fridge. Now here is the unbelievable part of my story. I emptied all the items from the SxS into coolers, brought in the new fridge, turned it on to fast cool & when I loaded the new freezer, I had SO MUCH FROZEN FOOD LEFT OVER that we had to put a good deal of it in the old fridge in the basement!! I never thought that the SxS held so much more than the bottom drawer freezer. Unless you have a very small family or buy very little frozen food, I find this is a difficult model to live. I had the room for a wider fridge but did not want to spend so much more money on a fridge. We are learning to live with it. I have no complaints with the GE Profile performance except that sometimes the food in the way back tends to freeze & I lower the temp. I would not recommend a bottom drawer freezer unless you have another freezer too. Sorry this is so wordy. Sherry...See MoreShould we buy this house? Needs a major renovation and addition
Comments (21)if you're not in love-don't buy it gut remodel -I don't know whether you're going to gut but you're also working on exterior-sounds like very extensive changes even without full gut-means tons of money, easily half a million in your case, and can take many months -we spent 27 months paying two mortgages, since one can't live in a house during gut remodel, and at some point also paying rent for MIL-because it all took so long due to hard-to get-labour. It's a boom now in construction, especially in HCOLA you'll wait and wait and wait. I don't see anything particularly dated in the house but then I'm not there and not a buyer, so.. The exterior is not my thing, but I don't find it particularly bad either. It all depends on what's around. I'm just saying I wouldn't be falling in love with it. No falling in love=clearer vision. Clearer vision=you won't save on buying and major remodeling. Either buy and reduce your scope of projects drastically(it might be still much bigger than you planned-does it have asbestos that has to be remediated if you disturb the house? does it have proper insulation? what about HVAC's condition? lots of unknowns here)-or buy some more expensive property that you like pretty much as is. Maybe it'll lack pool but you'd be able to add one. 50 K instead of 500 K. Two months instead of two years. Depends on your circumstances of course-right now I'm so tired after our remodel can't bring myself to get to finish the hardscaping. It's been more a year since we've moved in. Energy gone. I hope you're more energetic than me....See MoreNeed design help - converting old shower stall into sink area
Comments (16)is all the tile, curb and flooring coming out? can you make it a tad wider? I'd do a floating wood or some type of stone/quartz top. Think this design, but w/other elements these are not difficult to make or install. (that tile is going, yes?) You could look for an antique chest, table, etc, and modify it simple wood for the top and below storage want a tutorial? https://jenwoodhouse.com/powder-room-renovation/ Here's one more https://www.woodshopdiaries.com/diy-modern-floating-vanity/ maybe do a built in niche on the side. you can do a type of vessel sink or a drop in sink you might be able to find a slim vanity. just modify it to fit . prob 18". Hudson Bay. put up a small mirror and a sconce. shiplap or tongue and groove panels how do you plan on doing the faucet? I would not do a pedestal sink there. waste. console sink would be slightly better here's a small bathroom reno (it has 7 parts to it, here is part II demo) from Jen Woodhouse from the tutorial above https://jenwoodhouse.com/guest-bathroom-renovation-part-2-demo-day/...See Moresuezbell
