winterberry holly: what happened to the berries?
Comments (8)i cant reply to GWeb emails .... if you dont allow emails on your members page ... trees/conifers/shrubs.. in pots.. need fert.. because watering flushes out the good stuff in the media ... i just dont see where any of the named plants NEED anything from you.. but water.. to get over the fact you transplanted them ... are you suggesting.. your county is barren of native plants.. for lack of feeding.. your county soil so sterile.. that nothing you plant will survive without you juicing them??? listen.. i am a cheap SOB... i am leery.. of anything the guy sells, who recommends it ... its nonsense.. that plants are like children..and need to be fed .. that said.. a little of this or that wont hurt anything.. they just dont NEED it ... also.. if planting under aggressive trees.. such as maples.. when you dig a hole.. you sever maple roots.. and they will grow new feeder roots into your plant.. more so.. if you put plant food there.. and if your plant fails.. its usually from the maple sucking the life/water out of the soil ... in other words.. you fed the tree.. not your plant ... transplant are stressed.. from the transplant.. water helps them grow the roots .. to get over it.. feeding them does NOT help them get over it ... do whatever you want... but do it for the right reason ... rather than some gut feeling.. that you need to feed your children.. plants are not children ... ken...See MoreHolly berries are black????
Comments (2)When any berries on trees/shrubs of any type don't get enough water during their formative stage, they'll shrivel up and turn black. We usually get enough rain in the spring to make my blueberries plump, but if we have a dry spring, I water my blueberry bushes to ensure the crop. 'Sounds like this is what happened to your holly berries - water next time! :) Sherry...See MoreHollyhock, Hollyhock, Oh Holly, Holly, Holly...
Comments (50)Hi, MeMo. It's so nice to hear from you. This is the first time I've visited this gallery in a few months, and what a surprise it was to see this post right on top and your recent post added to it. I'm always interested to see what hollyhocks I have each year, as they are never the same twice. If they are good, I'll throw another picture up on this thread. Meanwhile, Hollyhock, Hollyhock, Oh Holly, Holly, Holly ... TM...See MoreSteeds Holly and Chesapeake Holly differences? They look the same.
Comments (5)why is this important ... if i might ask ... care would be precisely the same ... a little diversity in the planting .. in say leaf shape.. or whatever ... surely would be a plus ... grower dude enters a contract with bigboxstore ... for say.. 5000 holly ... stuff happens ... he sends them 5000 pots of holly ... contract filled ... tags are interpretational .. lol ... if you want to collect high grade precisely named plants ... you should buy from higher end sellers ... and pay the extra for your collection ... otherwise.. if you are covering some ground.. and price matters ... so be it.. we have all bought from BBStore ... even if we never really got an ID ... it served our purpose ... ken ps: in the hosta world.. same type of huge contracts to be filled ... and many of the mavens shop BBS ... just to find out.. if grower threw in some rarities.. just to get the proper number for sale .......See Moredavidrt28 (zone 7)
