Living room layout
I have a very odd shaped, asymmetrical living space. No matter where I put furniture, it’s either off center or blocking an entry way. I’ve attached photos. Any recommendations for furniture placement. I’m open to placing the tv on the wall next to the fireplace but the wall is so small.

Comments (12)justgottabme: Yes! excellent plan! The Tv needs to be in that corner next to the fireplace -- either mounted on the wall or sitting on a console or cabinet. Having a cabinet in that spot would anchor that whole corner. And more excellent ideas above too! Love the idea of bookshelves in each of the corners -- perhaps just try basic Ikea Billy shelving -- or other build-it-yourself shelves (try stores like Targer or Walmart)-- just to see if that plan will work for you? Or look for vintage shelving or bookcases on your local Craigs List! Swivel chairs can be found -- check your local Craigs List! Comments (6)IMO a fixed chaise is never a good idea for seating and that is really bad since who ever sits there is forced to sit with there legs up on the chaise . Just get a sofa and 2 chairs no loveseat which really are just a big chair where you can't reach one arm rest. The play area was a temporary set up, but your suggestion is a great separate seating arrangement, right by the windows to get some late afternoon sun! Rinked, thank you again for the various suggestions! I will look into sconces. the TV is a temporary set up (we will move it to the basement and keep the fireplace. The opposite wall has in built shelving so nothing really can be mounted there. good call on moving the liquor/bar area. i also liked that you switched up the two armchairs to be on the north side - it seems to fill up that area nicely. do you think i can/should add a sideboard/credenza/buffet anywhere in the living room? Some follow ups: we are planning to get rid of the grey chaise/couch and get a regular 3-seater sofa. do you recommend we stay with the cream/beige color scheme or perhaps try a green/chartreuse color or another gem tone or cognac-colored leather? will that go well with the two beige mid-century armchairs? we plan to buy a low square heavy coffee table to replace the current one. similarly, can i get away with not doing a cream/beige carpet? im worried about maintenance. lastly, do folks here think i need two separate seating sections in the living room given the size/length? id prefer not to since the raised platform is already a separate seating area. maybe by moving the two mid century armchairs, that would do enough to fill up the space. 2 years agoI can only tell you what I would try to do:
I would lower the TV so that it pretty much sits right on top of the mantel.
Then I would get a carpenter/cabinet maker to make a wood box with a paneled front that completely hid the TV when I wasn’t watching it, and that went all the way to the ceiling I’d have the box stained the same color as the rest of the wood of the fireplace. So it would end up looking a bit like this (minus the artwork in the middle of the paneling)

BUT;;;;;the trick is that the front piece of the paneled box would slide out or lift off when I wanted to watch TV. Being a cheapskate I would just have it removable and set it somewhere when I was watching TV, but I suspect a clever cabinet maker could do sliding or folding doors, or something clever.
Next issue: How many people sit in that room at one time and watch TV?

2 years agoYou can easily put your TV on an articulating arm and it can swing in and out from the wall. We might suggest putting the TV to the right of the fireplace on an articulating arm. Then we might recommend getting smaller, less bulky furniture. If you are able to do that you should be able to get a full size sofa and at least two chairs to fit in your space.

--Would you be willing to get a smaller TV and put it on a white chest to the right so you have some lightness on that end of the room? ?
--If you're handy, or someone you know is, either cut down the bookcase and put a smaller TV on it. Or add a couple shelves and put the TV in the middle.
-- Put a light piece of art above the fireplace so you have two things to look at.
