Who has built their own home?
Comments (14)My husband grew up around construction and taught drafting and shop for a while. We had a house burn down in the 70s just as we reached the end of a long remodel. DH and some shop boys rebuilt the house, and it took almost a year. We used contractors for several things, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, flooring. It was a trying time. Later, after working overseas for a number of years, we decided to build a home to return to. We spent all of two summers and then about six more months after we returned to finish, again using contractors for electrical, plumbing, HVAC and most of the flooring. We sold that house and have done several more, some with fewer contractors. I would say the best we've ever done is six months for a 2000 sq.ft. home, site work to move-in. That is the home where we are now, so it was backed by the most experience. It is an interesting challenge and parts are fun, but there is immense stress. Even after several homes, it is difficult to communicate just how you want something to the person doing it. Even if they perceive a mistake, there is not much joy in fixing something when so much else to do lies ahead. I liked the suggestion to build a garage and bath....See MoreNew House looks like a cave...Please help w exterior paint color?
Comments (3)A lighter color would look nice. I would try to match the stone work in front, or at least doesn't clash with it..Color??I went with a beige, isn't everybody. One color I was leaning towards was graige (not sure of the spelling Sherwin Williams carries it), a cross between gray and beige....See Moremobile homes where you own the land
Comments (25)Hi, I would like to own my own home on my own land. I am in the Boston area but willing to move further out. Does anyone know about modular home owners with land bought together in my area? There are a number of modular dealers in the Boston area. Google "modular home dealers, eastern Mass". Just remember though, modular is NOT manufactured housing. Modulars are the same as a site built home and the final product will cost the same. The only advantage is the time saved....See MoreWho owns this house??
Comments (23)Whoever gave the advice about making clear, in writing, the amount of the house value or cash that you have gifted to him and him alone is spot on. You could even state that it is a loan to be repaid at the time of house sale. He may be the only name on the purchase documents, but once the purchase is complete, he is free to gift any portion of the property to her that he pleases and amend the title to reflect the same. You won't be able to control or prevent that, but, if the relationship ever comes to an end it may be to your son's advantage to have proof that a certain $$ amount was his sole property and not joint. This came up in my family, in a very unfortunate situation where son-in-law and daughter took on a mortgage and purchased a condo for the mother. Title was in daughter's name only (to the surprise of s-I-l and mother -- a huge shock to mother because she had provided, cash, 1/3 of the purchase price, was paying the mortgage, and thought she had joint ownership). When s-I-l filed for divorce he tried to claim 50% ownership of the condo. Mother had to also go to court -- at age 83 -- to prove that she had a stake in the unit, that the money was not a gift -- and daughter was trying to claim that the money was a gift to her and her alone -- what a mess that was. NOTHING was in writing about the money, ownership arrangement, gifts, whatever. Other advice about the relationship is also on target. You could end up driving your son away entirely. I have known mothers who were right about the girl, but lost their relationship with the son over it -- but also knew a mother who was herself the problem, who couldn't stand not being the #1 woman in her son's life. Good luck to you!...See MoreDLM2000-GW
