Hi all! I'm planning to do some landscaping along the back of my house near our patio, and I'm looking for rose recommendations. I'm located in Northeast Ohio (zone 6a), and the roses would be planted along our house in an area that gets morning shade and afternoon sun, west/southwest facing. We have clay soil and I've had quite a bit of success planting drift roses, so I'm hoping an English rose variety might thrive as well!

Some specifics on what I'm looking for:

  • Fragrant
  • Medium to light pink; possibly open to salmon or coral as well
  • Upright/bushy habit
  • 4-5' tall (preferably 5') and 3-4' wide
  • Reblooming or continuous blooming
  • Blooms in part-sun (morning shade, afternoon sun)
  • Lower maintenance is nice, although I'm not opposed to a somewhat fussy rose if it's worth it (e.g. I'm perfectly fine with pruning to encourage reblooming and watering as needed during dry spells, etc.)

Some David Austin varieties I'm considering:

  • Gertrude Jekyll (grown as shrub, not climber)
  • Mary Rose
  • Princess Alexandra of Kent

Any thoughts on these, or other rose varieties I should consider?

I included a photo I mocked up with my landscaping ideas for the space, in case that's helpful (FYI, I plan on extending the two beds outward to accommodate 2 Sugar n' Spice arborvitaes and a perennial border + we have a project in the works to refresh our concrete patio, add a paver border, move the wood pile, etc, so it doesn't look so junky lol).

Thanks in advance for any thoughts/advice you have, rose lovers!
