Need help with home decor

Hello all,

This is our living room and I would like to bring in some changes with decor and add some colors, since there is a lot of gray going on. I wouldnt be able to change furniture at the moment, so I'm trying to do something small but nice.. all ur suggestions are welcome.. Thank You in Advance..

IMO The couches do not exist in this room by themselves. When you are looking to decorate a room, you need to look at the entire room - not just the furniture. The floors, ceiling, walls, any other furniture or decor needs to be considered. A unified and cohesive look is the goal. You have a lot of wall space that is sand in color. That seems to be the dominant color. Other colors are the floor, which is a reddish brown. Your fireplace has off-white, sand, tan, and a little brown in it. Your curtains are gray. Below are some pieces of art to consider. Keep in mind that art is very personal, so I would recommend that you look for a local artist, or art gallery. Some colleges even have their own art galleries. Take your time and find pieces you love. They will be your conversation pieces as well as pieces that reflect your personality. If you don't get anywhere locally, try art.com. I would recommend one very large and tall piece over the tv. Two samples in the links below. Get a print and have it framed locally in plexiglass (safer and easier to hang than glass). Lighting has a lot to do with the atmosphere of a space. Ceiling lights are not flattering. If you insist on using them, at least put them on a dimmer. Perhaps the biggest inexpensive change you could make is changing your curtains to bold choices, and I would suggest trying drapes with lots of orange in the living room

Bahaha, I didn't even notice they looked like "boob lights" until you pointed it out. What has been seen cannot be unseen! Structurally, we're in great shape. No major fixes are needed for at least another 5-10 years, at which point the windows will have to be done. Otherwise, everything else is already new (or relatively new). These are all great ideas and I'm so grateful to everyone that chimed in. I think I've just been feeling so overwhelmed and like I need to tackle everything at once... but as so many of you pointed out, it's OK to sit on it for a while (even years, if I want to)! One of my biggest issues is that I just don't know what I like. I know that sounds crazy, but since I was never really able to make changes to my space before now (we even lived in an apartment when I was a kid), I never had the opportunity to develop what my "taste" is. I will definitely spend some time on my idea books and start narrowing down what it is I like. I have found between Pinterest and now this site (which I just found today) that I seem to be leaning toward a more rustic-type look. PS. I don't actually love all that tan. It's a bit darker than the color in the living room and although the lighter color looks decent in the living room, it's "meh" for me in the dining/kitchen area. Any thoughts on what might look OK with the current kitchen schema, or should I just go for white and revisit later? Thanks again, everyone! I so appreciate the help.

think of something you love and make it a theme. you said this is a lake house. are there any beautiful photos from around that area? lake, trees, clouds, birds, etc? quaint photos of old buildings in the nearby town or anything like that? (like maybe by a local artist or something.) or like I said, you could choose some favorite family photos and have them reprinted to the right size, possibly in black and white. if the images are not clear enough to blow up, choose really wide matting. I love the look of a smaller pic with wide matting.

Your kitchen is very pretty, but I would definitely introduce color; please, no more gray! I too love watery blue/greens, and think that your color palette that you show looks great. I would do a super simple backsplash with something like the SW Meditative Blue, and do the counter stools upholstered in a color like the Mediterranean blue, either leather or fabric. I also prefer swivel stools for comfort and ease of "entry." This one from West Elm looks comfortable and may come in a few shades of blue.

I'd change the rug to something with some life and an accent color. Then add art over the fireplace, and echo the accent color in some couch cushions and accessories.
