Comments (12)Deer and rabbits are so frustrating, thanks for the comments. I have seen some hawks in the area....and an owl once! Venison sounds delicious too! torreya, Don't the rabbits chew through plastic mesh? I thought it would be pretty easy to breach. Maybe they just need a physical deterrent and move on to greener (unprotected) pastures.... So here's what I've been brainstorming... I was thinking of making some protectors out of wire and plywood, that would do double duty of protecting from animals and elements (drying northwest winds, create a snow trap around the seedling in winter). My plan was to cut a piece of plywood (say 1 by 2 feet tall), attach to a stake and hammer into the ground on the northwest side of the seedling....then wrap the whole works (about 2 feet in diameter) with 3 foot tall wire, stapling the wire to the back of the plywood for support. I know it would be alot of work (not to mention look awful), but they would be reusable, do a heck of a job to protect the tree, and would be in place for at least 3 or 4 years at a time. Does this sound like an alright plan? Any modifications/unforseen problems? Thanks for the input! Koren in Saskatoon...See MoreColumbine leaves are gone!
Comments (2)Columbine sawfly? They can, and do, defoliate the plants almost overnight here. Look for tiny worms (really larvae) - Here is a link that might be useful:...See MoreDeer resistant annuals
Comments (8)I sowed cypress vine many years ago but may have been too late as it didn't bloom well. Haven't tried again though have thought about it. Maybe next year. There are many plants in my gardens for hummingbirds. Moss roses self seed every year in front and under my mailbox which has dry sandy soil. Can't help loving a plant that takes care of itself. macfam69, surprised that your Yvonne's salvia had critter damage. I used to grow YS as well and didn't have any damage. Deer and rabbit damage vary from year to year. After years of little hosta damage most of my hosta have been savaged this year. Some phlox paniculata were pruned while other nearby ones were not. Don't think they ate the annual phlox the years that it was in my gardens. Annual rudbeckia is another one that in some spots it gets eaten and other areas it doesn't. Who knows why? Fickle, I guess. There are other annuals that I have grown over the years that had little or no damage, snapdragons (mine bloom late as are self seeded from years ago), cosmos, annual verbena, Impatients balfourii, ... I no longer plant pansies in the garden beds as they are like candy for critters....See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
