How to add curb appeal to our home?

Our front door is on the right side of our house. There is a sidewalk with a fence going up to the front door but sometimes people still can't find it. People have walked through our carport to the back door instead of using the sidewalk. How can I add curb appeal to attract people in the right direction. Also we recently took out a window by the front door. I feel that was a mistake. Is their any suggestions on how to make the area around the front door more appealing?

I might consider upgrading the garage door to something more decorative with windows and maybe a pair of large handles in the center, and doing something with the driveway (stain or stamping if the neighbors do it) and/or hardscape curves (pavers?) between the driveway and the door. Then I would try to think of something to put below the windows: extra trim or window boxes? I don't know. The whole left side of the pic feels blank. I know this all sounds expensive. Keep thinking about it and researching it and eventually you'll come up with some ideas that may be more cost effective. You may want to hire a designer before you invest too much. You could also line the driveway with plants and flowers. Think about ways to introduce curves. Paths and plants and paint. Can you put a flower bed around the mailbox? I love to see flowers around a mailbox. A paver seating area in front of the windows? Would you use that? It might be nice surrounded by shrubs. So many directions you could go in. Take your time.

Hi, I totally agree about lowering the windows as long as it doesn't affect the furniture arrangement. My home has a lot of almost to the floor windows and it makes the house look designed as opposed to having punched out of the wall windows. I really agree with Doug's ideas re the landscaping and updating the walk. Right now all the lines of your home and walk and steps are linear. I would put a curve into the sidewalk. That will soften the look and set the set off the house. Also your door and steps are the welcome to the public and if cost permits, I would make the stairs have rounded / curved fronts. I am not knowledgable in the f.s. but if all the lines are straight , it won't be comfortable. So, I would reiterate and suggest that you bring in curves.

If the windows with the view are a bedroom and bathroom, does that bathroom have another exterior wall in which you might add a window so any escaping sounds and smells from the bathroom do not open onto the deck? Have you considered sliding glass doors in the bedroom and/or (if the floor plan enables it) changing around the purposes of the rooms so the bedroom by the deck becomes a more used room .... such as could a dining room become a bedroom and the bedroom become a dining room? and/or build another bedroom and bath upstairs above the bedroom and bath on the main floor so the deck side bedroom might become a bonus room/den? Adding a downstairs entry facing the "front" (photographer) could be a good idea, depending upon the layout of the home. However, if the current main entry is beneath the deck, you might consider turning the garage into a sun room or screened porch that wraps around to become the entry unless you actually need/want another opening facing "front" (photographer). Do at least first consider what that would do to the interior of the room in which you're adding the entry. Does the room lend itself to that change? What side of the house is north/south/east/west -- will that impact your decision?

You have a very charming house! But you are correct, it needs something. If this was my home I would add tons of white trim to the exterior. Big trim on the corners and around windows & doors. I’m not fond of the circular part above your front door. I would remove it. I would then install a different siding in the 2 large peaks and have a big piece of horizontal trim separating the 2 sidings. The siding within the peaks could be scalloped, or board & batten, or smaller and vertical, there’s lots of options out there. Also remove the storm door (I’m one of those anti-storm door people). Also, I wouldn’t go too crazy with landscaping. What you already have will grow and fill in.

The photos do make it look like a back door. I'd remove that fence. It doesn't appear to serve any purpose and removing it will visually open up the doorway area. Plant some shrubs and flowers between the house and the walkway. Plant a taller shrub between the walkway and the a/c unit to cover that up. Place a welcome mat at your door. Install a light fixture on the left side of your door so it is visible at night.

I agree with calidesign. Great suggestions.
Also. Can you take a picture of the whole front please.
I would also consider removing the storm door if possible so it looks more like a front entrance.
I’m also thinking maybe to make the walkway a bit more ... maybe cutting the cement down a bit and having grass between each Square...

I'd remove all the wood railing. Build a wide staircase from the short end of the driveway leading up to the walkway closer to the house. You can leave the whole walkway there for people who don't want steps, but you need something that leads more directly to the door, and something wide enough at the base so it looks more substantial. You can make changes to the front door area, but since it can't be seen when first at the house it's more important for that area to be right.

The fence may be saying, "No entry." I understand the need for the railing near the parking area and slope, but once it arrives at the corner of the house, it should do a 90 degree turn, abut the house and leave the remaining walk to the entry open and well-landscaped and lighted to lead folks in. Try putting a nice sign on the fence that has an arrow pointing toward the entry and reading "Entrance." If you decide to remove all the fencing, then I would try a sloping walk angling up diagonally from the parking area up to the upper walk level with a less heavy looking handrails - maybe wrought iron. Go heavy on the landscaping to lead the eye where you want guests to go.

Perhaps a sturdy arbor (with a Welcome sign) would help direct people to "go up - this way to the door".
