Growing some new-to-me cowpeas this year and some old favorites

I have Piggott Family Heirloom started plus a 20 ft row of Yellow Ripper needed for fresh seed. I also started some White Whipporwill so I will have enough for a large planting next year. In the new and unusual category, I got Sangaraka from ARS-Grin a few years ago. They are no longer available so I decided to grow mine out. I got KVX61-1 which is an unusually sweet cowpea from a friend back in the winter. I have them also started with a 20 ft row to multiply seed.

Next I will put in a couple of rows to produce peas for winter. Probably this will be Green Dixie, Piggott, and Hercules. I love having cowpeas in the freezer for a winter meal so will probably plant about 200 feet of row space to these.

Fusion, really good to see you posting again! :-)

I grew Green Dixie last year; it did well in spite of unusually high weed pressure, has good-sized seeds, and I like the restrained bush habit. Sangaraka looks interesting, large seeds in 12" pods... if it does well, I hope you will post a review.

This year I will be planting 21 peas, MN 13, Thailand pole (which is really more of a yardlong type), White Cream Crowder, and an unnamed purple-pod which may be a bush yardlong. Also my black-seeded yardlong (Asparagus) which I've been growing since 2000. All but two are seed renewals.

I acquired several new varieties from SSE this year: Canide, Mississippi Silver, Queen Anne, Sunapee, Yellow Eyes, and the White Cream Crowder. All were ripening & productive when observed in Iowa, so should do well here as well. They will be trialed in the next two years. Any comments on their culinary qualities would be welcome.

A friend mentioned to me that her family eats cowpeas at breakfast every day. Last year I grew 100' of them and discovered she's right. They make an excellent side dish with breakfast. Season them with salt, pepper, and a bit of bacon or sausage grease. I don't know why I never thought of this before. "Beans - they're not just for dinner anymore." This year I'm growing a lot more varieties.

My friend has a home very similar and she put in secret passages through the closets to the other kids bedroom! They loved it then and still do. They are 12 1/2 & 11yrs My son is into FBI, CSI and police stuff too (8yrs old) and we have secret places, old cell phones, spy gear to listen far away etc. I think "spy" has to do with being top secret, so anything police related but you can't tell it's used to get the bad guy LOL Anything that is hidden, special secret boxes, false floor bookshelf, toybox with false bottom, locked safe/type things etc About his room..........one thing I realized was that I would somehow get my thoughts/opinions in what my son wanted because I wanted it or thought it was best 'down the road'. I've come to realize.........let them decide and do it, it's what they want and will like it no matter what because they thought of it. I also have a teen........it's all changed anyway, new bigger bed, new mattress, painted dresser, painted walls,posters etc. What ever he decides he'll grow out of it in 6yrs or so........and it's time to paint by then anyway and sometimes buy new funiture too. Good luck with it (btw....green walls help if he changes to outdoor theme, jungle theme, military theme : )

Wow, Thank you for all the suggestions, this is such a good web page! I am happy to report that Chloe has not peed on anything since my original post. Shortly after posting my message I changed her litter back to the traditional gravel/clay litter. I guess she was trying to tell me that she didn't like the pine wood litter when she peed on the cloths. Regarding the diet food I mentioned, it is Hill's Prescription Diet: z/d Low Allergen. The vet said that the proteins are broken down in this food, therefore there is less of a chance for agitation and digestive issues. So other than the fact that she is still not cleaning herself properly she has been her normal funny self :) She is a little bit over weight which may be the reason why she has issues bending and licking her privates :o Thanks for all the responses everyone! Jericho isn't exactly new. It is an heirloom variety that has been around for at least a few decades now. I've grown it on and off (not every year) since the early 2000s and it does well for me in the heat, but not any better (and sometimes not as well as) some of the Summercrisp varieties like Sierra, Cardinale and Cherokee. I have bought Jericho seeds from a variety of retailers over the years including Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, Johnny's Selected Seeds, Peaceful Valley Farm Supply and Bountiful Gardens. Shelley, To find the old threads that have grow lists, just do a search that includes the year and "grow list". You should find separate lists on cool season veggies, warm season veggies, tomatoes and peppers and maybe on squash.

They are just in normal garden soil (mine is a little heavy and clay-like, but it's not waterlogged at all). Both plants (affected and unaffected) are in the same soil, only a few feet apart. The soil smells okay, no plant food used, afternoon sun only (not that hot in my part of the world (UK)). Here's a photo of a tip of a shoot that has grown from a longer shoot which had the problem a month or so ago (as outlined in my first message) - you'll see that the problem is also present on this new shoot: http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g319/Dalek99999/P7301230.jpg This will also eventually turn completely brown and die, just like the others did a while back.

I've had canned crowder peas for breakfast before. Excellent idea.

Maybe mix them with scrambled eggs perhaps.
