keeping grass edge separate from garden
Comments (15)I have a new neighbour who is a new gardener and as the first thing he had to do upon moving in was to cut down a huge conifer that dominated both our properties, he has had to jump into designing his garden right away. He is putting in grass with a few small perimeter beds and it was interesting that he realized very quickly that each decision about where to put grass and where to put plants immediately generates the question of how to separate them. We have flat properties here with street parking, so there are few "natural" demarcations like walls, walks, driveways, and such. All that to say that edging is really a major issue in planning and should be addressed up front in the design process. I have to say I really like a clear edge too, but I don't like to see plastic. I use mostly rock, sometimes with a sunken bit of edging to keep the grass out of the rocks where it abuts the neighbour's grass. But mostly I am passing on grass beside rock at all ( did start a thread about this way back when...). As my yard is small, there isn't much room for lawn anyway and I'm just using the leftover chippings from the aforementioned tree to mulch the surface for now. Woody, it sounds like you really have pushed off in new directions since you last showed your garden. Congratulations on getting some big decisions made, and obviously a lot of work done! And kudos to those of you out working in the hot sun too. Cheers! KarinL...See MoreWill Cat/Dog Urine Ruin My Grass Permanently?
Comments (7)The brown spots are usually dead, but can sometimes surprise you by resprouting from their roots. Yellow, red, and whatnot are generally just shocked. Spreading grasses will fill the holes if your grass spreads. Realizing the vagrancies of cats, it can be hard to water the spots where they pee. If possible, though, diluting the places the cat goes will fix the problem if you get there fast enough....See Moredog's water dish is ruining floor
Comments (12)There may have been moisture within the flooring when you placed the plastic cover over it, so be sure it's thoroughly dry before putting anything on top of the floor. I think I'd try a large mat as cindy suggested and also switch to a larger, deeper bowl. Your dog may still drip water as he walks away from the bowl, but if it's deeper and wider it's less likely he'll slosh water everywhere!...See MoreDog ruining newly planted grass
Comments (6)I have a question. Is there another place in your yard where you can provide your dog a nice grassy area that can be HIS place??? My dog has the same likes he loves to make "doggie angels" grass, snow or dirt does not matter. Just find a nice 4' X 4' area and place some sod down and when he starts rolling in the grassy area you dont want him in, just redirect him to HIS area. You may even come up with a command to: "Go play in your space" If you do not have the extra space, you will need to apply some diversion training. It will take alot of patience and determination on everyone who lives in your household. Verbally correcting the dog as soon as it starts heading in the direction of the grassy area, and redirecting your dog to play with a toy etc wil be your best bet. Let me know how it goes - repost and if you need more help or more explicit instructions I will be happy to help....See MoreQuentin Parker
