Portable Electric Burner for Pressure Canning
Comments (20)I just posted a link in another thread about another source for propane burners that MUST be used outdoors or in an open garage. Northern Tool used to offer a decent one with three separate valves and rings to control the heat. None of the current stand alone electric burners will produce enough heat to get a big pot boiling quickly. The heating elements on the plug-in electric burners that are stand alones are just 120 volts about a 1000 watts. An electric stove uses 220 volts and amost the same wattage, but offers a lot more heat. If your doing lots of canning, you can also consider using an electric range top only (no oven), and mount it in a big plywood frame/box. It would also require a 220 volt connection, but no ventilation would be needed. Here is a link that might be useful: Patio stove...See MoreOur 'Induction' Weekend - Portable/Painful!
Comments (15)Regarding portable vs. built-in- I have a built in Fagor and my preschool children have not mentioned any issues with noise from the unit. No, I didn't deafen them as infants since I didn't have the cooktop back then. I'm wondering if the fact that it's a portable unit is just a red herring. I'd suggest calling Fagor America and see if there are any know issues with the unit you have. Maybe see if it's a warranty problem. It would be nice to know the exact frequency of the noise, if only to have solid numbers on hand when complaining/talking to Fagor. You might be able to use a good digital recorder and get some frequency analysis of a recording of the noise. Actually, probably just get one of your kids to do it- they may be able to do it all on the computer/laptop with the built in microphone and easily available software....See MoreFavorite portable induction burner?
Comments (3)I got the Sunpentown a few years ago. I don't use it too often, it's my 5th burner when I'm having a big dinner or canning, etc. I also use it when the grandchildren are helping me cook something, since I don't like them hanging over the gas cooktop. It works. It was about $100, on sale, at Amazon, when I got it. I had to buy a couple of saucepans, but I have cast iron pans that I use most of the time....See MorePortable induction burner arrived yesterday
Comments (29)I was wondering if you had some unusual HVAC, oh, like an outdoor wood furnace and I don't know what for cooling - Nubian slaves with ostrich-feather fans, who just happened not to be there at the time? Our tax assessor has us down for electric heat (partially correct, since the heat pump includes radiant heat for those times when the geothermal can't keep up) and no AC. Guess it has to be that way since they're not allowed to tax us on a geothermal system. But I know it looks strange on the tax card. If we ever sell, it might be hard to convince buyers what type of system we have. Though by then I hope geo will be much more common. We have hard water, so the little bit that spits out of the top of the canner (doesn't have a tight-fitting lid) vaporizes around the bottom of the pot and leaves a ring that I just can't get off. I also have some black burnt-on stuff right on the white ring that marks the smaller front burner, nothing seems to get that off (it's probably grape jelly)....See MoreAnne
