Veggie Tales- January 2021
Comments (281)Hi all - I jumped into this thread early in the month and then got caught up in work. Today was a good day to thinking about gardening though, with 3-4" fresh snow on the ground and more coming down throughout the day. I sure am glad I ordered the bulk of my seeds over the Christmas break. I just checked the results of a germination test with some old seeds (2014/2015) and placed a small order with Seed Savers, which is now publishing a 30-day shipping delay. These are seeds I don't have to start until April, so that's fine. I have broccoli seeds from 2014 that are still germinating at a great rate, so that was nice to see. My next big adventure will be going out in the next week or so to purchase some compost. We only started our pile last summer, and it's frozen/covered in snow, so I need some for my seed starting mix. I'm doing a homemade mix and trying soil blocks this year (the Elliot Coleman method). My first seeds (onions/leeks) should be started around February 15, and compost is the only ingredient in the mix I'm still missing. Trying to figure out where to get it (might end up at Home Depot) since February isn't exactly prime compost time in Wisconsin. @Cindy - I'm going to try germinating some Hot Portugal seeds from 2012 this year, so I'll report back on that. :) In the past I think I've only had to use seed that was 2-3 years old....See MoreVeggie Tales - June 2021
Comments (191)Lea and Len - I'm so sorry for the damaged plants and fruit. Hopefully all is not lost and can be salvaged. Here is the heartland we are having rain day after day. At my house we have received about 8" in the last week but areas to the north and east have gotten nearly double that amount. The rain is supposed to end by noon tomorrow. I haven't even gone out to the garden since Sunday due to the rain. I imagine I may have some monster summer squash out there. I need to pick the bush beans too and take them to the lake. I'll have to do that while I'm 'working' tomorrow. Nothing like getting paid to harvest the garden! We are heading to the lake tomorrow afternoon and it is supposed to be nice, sunny, and temps in the low 80s through Monday. I'm hoping to get lots of fishing in. Hope they are biting!!...See MoreVeggie Tales - August 2021
Comments (187)Cindy - I appreciate the concern and I think I've been too negative this year. Sorry. It looks like what's left of IDA is making a harder right turn so we'll just get brushed. But they're still predicting some major flooding mostly from the river levels caused by the rain before that gets here. But I'm worried that you'll get hit and vgkg will get more rain that he needs. Stay dry! It never occurred to me that my tomatoes are amazingly crack free; I'm guessing because they're getting a consistent amount of moisture?...See MoreVeggie Tales >>> May 2023
Comments (68)Jumping outside between the showers it looks like the peas have 1-2 more pickings before they're exhausted. 2 plantings of late corn will replace them along the trellis. The broccoli is also kaput now, and will compost their remains tomorrow. The remaining 4 purple cabbages are very close to harvest so that row will become free for some back-up watermelon plants. Looking a late season for melons this year. The squash is blooming now and the cukes are just starting to produce both male & female buds. The sweet potatoes are showing the beginnings of vines and the 2nd corn is 3" high now as the 1st corn hits the 18" mark. The bush beans are now blooming so we'll switch from shelling peas to snapping beans soon. The asst cantaloupes (Ambrosia, Sugar Cube, Honeydew, & Crenshaw) are faring better than the watermelons at this point but each are still in the pre-vining stage. The tomatoes are setting nicely and the peppers are starting to bloom as the 1 eggplant gets its act together. All Lettuces are still sweet too....can you tell it's still raining outside? ;-)...See MoreRelated Professionals
