I see no reason why you could not install such a railing.

As far as the Japanese Maple goes, is there another place you could move it to? I transplanted mine over twenty years ago because it had been planted too close to the house and never regretted the move. The white flower tree on the left could benefit from some pruning to open it up and restore a more natural shape.

Thanks.I plan on relocating the maple to the backyard. The white tree, crab apple should also go in my opinion. Birds nest in it and I love to hear them chirp, do it gets to stay.

I think either of these would look good.

I think of cable as being contemporary/modern and I think of your home as being more traditional. I would do white wood, or the new PVC wood looking rails 4 inch top rail, just wide enough to place a wine or juice glass when you 're sitting outside enjoying your very pretty porch!

I have a Sargent Crab Apple that I love for the flowers and the "apples" that last into the winter. Both birds and the squirrels love them. But mine is not so tightly branched. If you have pruned, it could be that they are cutting the limbs at the end which forces more branching.

The crab has obviously been over pruned and should be allowed to resume its natural shape.

My sentiments exactly.

I know the house is colonial and more traditional but I’m looking to change it up a bit. I live in an old development and all the houses are the same. I would like to set it apart. I also don’t want to look out at bars when I’m sitting on the porch.

Sorry I think the cable rail is just too modern for your house. I would not remove the flowering tree but would have it thinned a bit so it can start to look natural. Love the idea of bluestone steps.

Can you recommend railing that you think would look good and not be too bulky?
